For some of your classes, your resource list will be a useful starting point, but you’ll want to explore other resources in the Library (and beyond). Here are some of the ways you can find what else is out there:

DiscoverEd

DiscoverEd is the Library’s discovery service; use it to search the Library’s collections, including books, e-books, journal titles, journal articles, and databases.

If you can’t find a book you need for your studies, you can use the Request a Book form and the Library will try to buy it. However, it can take a few weeks for a book to arrive; if you need something quickly, you might want to submit an interlibrary loan request instead.

About Interlibrary Loans (ILL)

You can use the ILL service to borrow material not held by Edinburgh University Library. Most things can be requested: books, articles, reports, conference proceedings, patents, standards as well as other materials. All staff and students have a quota of free requests per academic year (5 for undergraduates, 30 for postgraduates and staff) and straightforward requests from widely-available books or major journals can arrive within a few days, but more obscure items can take longer, so don’t leave your request to the last minute!

But how do I find what isn’t in the Library…?

Many ‘extra’ resources will come from the bibliographies of the books and journal articles on your resource list; you’ll come across an interesting title and want to investigate further. However, you can also use other discovery services such as WorldCat, which searches the collections of over 10,000 libraries around the world.

You can also contact your Academic Support Librarian, who will be able to help you with things like literature searching and explain more about all the different services the Library offers.

• I can’t access the things on my list!

What to do: If you’re having problems accessing the resources on a list, or can’t see links where there ought to be links, then you may not be logged in to Resource Lists.

If you see ‘Guest’ in the top right of the screen you’re not logged in!

To log in, just click on ‘Guest’ and then you’ll be prompted to sign in using your EASE details. You should now be able to see the links and access all the resources on your list.

• I’m getting an ‘illegal institution’ error message!

What to do: This issue does crop up occasionally, but should be resolved if you try the following:

1. If you’re going through LEARN, don’t use Internet Explorer! Use Chrome or Firefox;
2. If you’re going through LEARN and using Safari, you may need to change your browser settings to ‘accept cookies’;
3. If you’re still having problems, you can log in through the homepage (http://resourcelists.ed.ac.uk). You need to make sure and sign in to have full text access to resources (go to ‘Guest’ top right of screen to log in).
4. If you’re still unable to access Resource Lists, we can check your  Library account is set up correctly – if this is the case, drop us a line (library.learning@ed.ac.uk) with your details and we’ll investigate.

• I need some Resource Lists guidance!

A resource list is more than just an easy way to get to your course reading (very useful though that is!); you can follow lists, add and tag items in your personal collection, and discuss the resources on a list. Also, you can suggest new items to add to your resource lists.

We’ll be posting about new updates every month, but here are some of the new features in Leganto released in December:

1. New! Student view: you see what your list looks like from a student’s point of view. Click on the ‘Reading list options’ button, then select ‘View list as a student’:

2. New! The ‘Send List’ button is at the top of the list. It’s now a bit easier to send your list to the Library for review:

Also, when you hover over the ‘Send List’ button, you can see when it was last sent over to the Library:

3. New! You can export a .ris file of your items in ‘My Collection’ for use in bibliographic management software such as EndNote or RefWorks:

4. New! Deleted lists can be recovered. Don’t worry if you’ve accidentally deleted your list! Get in touch with Library Learning Services and we can recover it for you.

And a sneaky peak for next month… You’ll be able to associate a Creative Commons licence with a list, which shows anyone viewing your list how it can be used or shared. This is a new feature we requested and it’s a simple way to manage the copyright terms that apply to your list.

The Library Learning Services team has a bit more time to work on lists before the end of the year (Leganto has really helped us speed through our work!)… So, if you missed the deadline, but would like a resource list for Semester 2, please get in touch by Friday 1^st December.

If you would like the Library to build your Semester 2 Resource List, please send your annotated list with a completed coversheet to library.learning@ed.ac.uk. We’ll start working on it and try to get books purchased and chapters scanned before the start of term.

Alternatively, you can create your list yourself and use ‘Send to library’ to request a review.

Remember to prioritise items on your list using the ‘Essential’, ‘Recommended’ and ‘Further reading’ tags, and to request e-reserve scans, use the ‘Digitisation’ tag and ‘Library discussion’ to provide page numbers or chapter details of pages you’d like scanned.

ExLibris have been busy building new features – and fixing some issues – in Leganto. Here are the edited highlights from the November release:

1. New! Students can add their own tags to citations – these tags are visible only to the student. Students can filter lists using their own tags or the tags added by instructors.

This is a student’s view of a citation with two extra tags added:

2. Fixed! When you access a list via Learn, you’ll be prompted to open Resource Lists in a  new tab if your browser blocks pop ups. No more error messages!

3. New! Students and course organisers can see recent changes from within a resource list. Now you can select ‘Display recent list changes’ from the reading list options menu:

Then you’ll see a list of changes specific to that list:

4. New! Course dates will display both start and end dates.

• For a course running in single year, the year appears as before. For example: 2017
• For a course that spans one year to the next (i.e. one academic year), the years appear as: 2017/18
• For a course that spans over more than two years, the years appear as: 2017-19

5. Fixed! Cite it! has been fixed to work with ScienceDirect. So, when you use Cite it! to add articles from Science Direct, the information will show up correctly on your list.
