The new reading list system, Leganto is now live!

Staff and students can view the new homepage at the current Resource Lists address: http://resourcelists.ed.ac.uk

To access resources on lists or to start building/editing/following lists, sign in by clicking on ‘Guest’ (top right) and use your EASE username and password.

Existing Talis Aspire lists

If you can’t see your old Talis list on Leganto yet, don’t worry, we’ll be checking all migrated 2016/17 lists and publishing them soon. We’ll be in touch with Course Organisers individually to let you know when your lists are available on Leganto.

Access Resource Lists via Learn

Course organisers, you can add  Resource Lists (Leganto) to your course on Learn. Once this is done, you will be able to click through and start using the system to build your resource lists for 2017/18 and your list will be associated automatically with the course in Learn. Once lists are published, students will be able to access them via their courses in Learn.

From Monday 12^th June the Resource Lists web address http://resourcelists.ed.ac.uk will take you to the new reading list system, Leganto and not to Talis Aspire.

Between 12^th June-12^th July, you can still access your Talis Aspire resource lists using this web address: http://ed.rl.talis.com

Please note: access to Talis Aspire will end on 12^th July 2017.

You will be able to access the new reading list system, Leganto from Monday 12^th June.

All 2016/17 Talis Aspire resource lists have been copied to Leganto, so there’s no need to create new versions of existing lists.  If you can’t see your existing list on Leganto, don’t worry, we’ll be checking and publishing it soon. We’ll be in touch with Course Organisers individually to let you know when your lists are available on Leganto.

As Leganto is going live very soon, we’ve made a few changes to the Resource Lists website over the last couple of weeks (but it won’t look too different – even though the resource lists system is changing, the service is staying the same). Here are links to some of the new pages:

• A new information for students page, including what to do if you can’t access something on your list.
• An updated page with information for academic staff: what you need to do if you’d like the Library to create a list for you and how to create your own lists using Leganto.

The new reading list system, Leganto, launches in June, so you’ll soon be able to create your resource lists using the new system.

To help get you started with Leganto, throughout June Library Learning Services is running Resource Lists workshops for academic staff and course administrators. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be able to use Leganto to create and update your own resource lists. We’ll also explain how the Library is using Resource Lists to manage Course Collections and provide access to core reading materials for students.

 The new resource lists system will be going live at the start of June, so it’s a good time to think about preparing your lists for 2017/18.

Course organisers, please send your lists to library.learning@ed.ac.uk by 10^th July and we’ll create a beautifully formatted list in Leganto.

Alternatively, if you’d like to use Leganto to create the list yourself, please submit your list to the Library for review by 24^th July.

Once we receive your list, we’ll process e-reserve scan requests, purchase new or additional copies of books, and move items to the HUB or reserve collections.

We will continue to provide resource lists throughout the year, but submitting your lists by these deadlines means we have as much time as possible to get things ready for the new semester.

Send your list to the Library

If you’d like us to create your list in Leganto, please send your annotated reading list and coversheet to library.learning@ed.ac.uk by 10^th July.

Create a list yourself

We’ll make new guides available soon to help you get started with Leganto, so after the new system goes live the week beginning 5^th June, you’ll be able to create your own lists.

After you create your lists, please send them to the Library for review by 24^th July.

Training sessions

There will be bookable training sessions throughout June. Dates will be announced soon (keep an eye on the blog) or you can email library.learning@ed.ac.uk to arrange a one-to-one or group visit.

Existing (Talis Aspire) resource lists

If you already have a resource list, this will have been copied from the old system (Talis Aspire). Library staff will review each list and once it’s checked, we’ll be in touch with information on how to access your the new Leganto list. You can then edit, review and/or add new resources to the list and send back to the Library, if new books or scans are needed.

What have we been doing?

We’re on track to go live with Leganto, our new resource lists system, week beginning 5^th June. We’ve started checking the lists that we’ve moved over from the previous system and everything’s looking good so far.

Over the last few months we’ve been busy:

• Preparing the current resource lists data for migration
• Learning about all the features of the new system
• Creating new user guides and training materials
• Figuring out how the Library teams will work together to process resource lists as efficiently as possible
• Asking the ExLibris support team lots and lots of questions…

What happens next?

During w/b 5^th, we’ll send you details on how you can view and edit existing lists and start creating new lists to send to the Library for processing.

Over the summer, we’ll have four Resource Lists Assistants joining us in the Library Learning Services team. As well as creating and reviewing new lists, they’ll be checking all of the lists that we moved over from the previous reading list system, to make sure everything has migrated correctly.

Once all the training materials are complete, we’ll be offering workshops and training sessions for Course Organisers. Details of bookable sessions will be circulated shortly. We’re also happy to come to you and hold one-to-one sessions; please get in touch at library.learning@ed.ac.uk to arrange a visit.

We’ll also be asking Course Organisers to send us their Semester 1 resource lists by 10^th July or create their own and send for review by 24^th July.

On 1^st April we exported all relevant resource list data from Talis Aspire to transfer to the new reading list system, Leganto. This means that when you access Leganto, you’ll see your resource list as it was on 31^st March. Any changes made after this date, will not have be automatically transferred to Leganto.

If you export your list as a PDF, you can use this is a reference to add any resources added after 31^st March to your new Leganto list. You will be able to access your Talis list until 10^th July.

To export your list as a PDF:

• Log in to your Talis list using EASE.
• Click on the Export icon at the top of the list
• From the drop-down options select Export to PDF

This will save a pdf copy of your list on your computer. Please keep this copy.

In an earlier blog post we described how to back up your Talis bookmarks and import them into Leganto.

You can use these bookmarks to add to your Leganto list any items that you may have added to your resource list in Talis after the cut-off date, using your backed up list as a guide.

Alternatively you can simply add any new items to your Leganto list as normal. We will be making detailed guides on using Leganto available soon.

Another nice new feature that Leganto brings, is the ability to use a Template when creating a new resource list. The Library has set up some pre-prepared templates based on the way course organisers typically structure their resource lists.

Templates are a quick and easy way of adding a structure to your list with a single click.

When creating a new list in Leganto, you will automatically have the option to select a template.

Combined with the ability to store your favourite resources for re-use in My Collection (as seen in last week’s post), the process of building up a list can become as straightforward as dragging and dropping your resources onto the prepared structure.

This is a great way to speed up the list creation process and to ensure consistency across lists.

After a template has been applied to a list, it is of course possible to edit/modify the structure by editing any of the individual sections or deleting ones that are not needed. This can be done by opening the options drop-down menu and selecting “Edit” or “Delete” section.

You can also add a description to your section (with e.g. specific instructions for students).

Course organisers will not be able to set up their own templates, but the Library will have a selection of prepared templates ready for use.

At the initial launch stage there will be three prepared templates available: a “12-Week-semester” template, a “Resource types” template, and a “Reading Priority” template with “Essential”, “Recommended” and “Further Reading” sections.

We can add frequently used templates, so if there is a list structure that you use often and find especially useful, please do let us know!

The new resource lists system will be launching in June, but our service won’t be changing. Course Organisers will still be able to create their own resource lists or, alternatively, send the details over to the Library and we’ll set up the resource list in Leganto. We’ll announce deadlines in due course – keep an eye on the blog for details.

As well as creating and reviewing resource lists, the Library will continue to order new or additional copies of books (or ebooks), process scans and move books to the HUB or Reserve.

How the Library orders books for courses

It’s important to continue to prioritise the items on your resource lists as ‘Essential’, ‘Recommended’ or ‘Further Reading’. As well as complying with the University’s Accessible and Inclusive Learning Policy, it helps students manage their workload, and helps the Library make sure there are enough books on the shelves (or ebooks online). When the Library decides how many books to purchase, we look at the student numbers for the course and the priority assigned to each of the resources. If there aren’t enough books available, we make purchases based on the following ratios:
