Important Resource List Update: 2015/16 Time Period

Univeristy of Ediburgh Logo

We are starting preparations for the 2015/16 academic year and will shortly be co-ordinating the rollover of current 2014/15 lists to Session 2015/16.

As part of this process we will shortly create a new Session 2015/16 time period. This allows:

a) Brand new lists to be attached to Session 2015/16

b) Current 2014/15 lists to be rolled over to Session 2015/16

IMPORTANT: If you have a current resource list for Session 2014/15 DO NOT change the time period on your list.

Once roll-over is complete you will have two versions of your list, a 2014/15 version and a 2015/16 version.

– Previous lists will continue to be available to students.

– Rolled over lists will be available for editing and updating to allow for changes in content.

– Old versions may be archived.

Do NOT manually change the time period on your list:

– It will overwrite the 2014/15 version of your list.

– Any links in Learn or Moodle to the 2014/15 list will break.

– Students from previous years will no longer have access to their version of the list.

We will circulate information and guidance on what you need to do to ensure the smooth roll-over of your list(s) when we are ready to do this.

More information on the service can be found on the Resource Lists using Talis Aspire webpage and the ResourceLists@Edinburgh Blog.

Action required: Update your bookmark tool

Univeristy of Ediburgh Logo

Talis Aspire have launched an updated bookmark tool that will work with both HTTP and HTTPS websites.

Background

In reaction to a number of security issues that occurred last year, many websites have slowly been changing from a HTTP address to a HTTPS address. Moving websites to a HTTPS address increases security by adding a ‘secure certificate’ to the site.

However, the addition of this secure certificate has been clashing with the Talis Aspire bookmark tool and may have been preventing it from working on some of the sites that you regularly use. (The bookmark tool is the button that appears on your browser bookmarks bar which is used for adding resources to lists).

What do I have to do?

When Talis Aspire detects that it is being used on a HTTPS website a pop-up window will let you know that a newer version of the bookmarklet is available and provide instructions on how to install it. Please install the newer version of the bookmark tool when prompted.

The current bookmarklet will still work on HTTP websites; however, we would recommend you update the bookmarklet tool. Talis Aspire have made it even easier to do this.

Adding or updating the bookmarklet tool is a quick process. Go to http://resourcelists.ed.ac.uk/ and then to the ‘My bookmarks’ tab. On the right of the page is an ‘install bookmark button’, click on this and Talis Aspire will detect which browser you’re using and walk you through adding the bookmark tool.

Changing Resource List Time Periods

Univeristy of Ediburgh LogoImportant service update

As part of the integration with Learn we have needed to change the way a semester time period is assigned to a Resource List.

We have created a short guide with screenshots further detailing the process.

Changing Resource List Time Periods (PDF)

What does this mean?

Where we previously had the following options:
-Semester One 2014/15
– Semester Two 2014/15
– Semester One & Two 2014/15

These have been removed and there is now a single option available:
– Session 2014/15

All Resource Lists for the next year should be assigned to this time period.

This new time period will cover 1st April 2014- August 2015 in order to accommodate schools whose teaching year falls outside the official semester dates.

What do I need to do?

If you are working on a draft list (i.e. an unpublished list) please change the time period for each of your draft lists now. Use IE (Internet Explorer) or Chrome to make the change.

This is a very simple process:
1. Go to the list
2. From the Edit drop down button
3. Click on ‘Set Time Period’
4. Select the new ‘Session 2014/15’ time period form the drop down list
5. Save
Note: The pop up box contains text saying it will publish the list with this save. Don’t worry it won’t publish your list. This is a bug in the system which is currently in development to be changed. Make the change and save, your list will remain unpublished until you click on the ‘publish’ button.

Semester Information

If you want to make it clear that a list is for a specific semester add extra information to the List Title.
E.g. Film and Other Art – Semester 2
Note: If the list covers both Semester One & Two there is no need to add this information to the List title.

Published lists for Session 2014/15

No action is required. We will change the time period information for you.
A guide will shortly be available via the blog and IS website describing, in more detail, how to create a list and assign time periods.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please get in touch.

More information on how to make the most of Resource Lists can be found on the Resource Lists using Talis Aspire webpage and the ResourceLists@Edinburgh Blog.
