New resources: Elgar 2025 ebooks

You may be interested in some of the exciting new ebook packages we’ve purchased recently for use by students and staff in the School.

Edward Elgar Publishing are a well-respected publisher who produce excellent books, textbooks and journals in many subject areas. We often purchase their annual Law ebook package, and this year is no different. Some highlights include:

Getting a jump-start on Resource Lists!

If you’re an academic working in the School of Law, you may have seen several emails flying back and forth about Resource Lists and getting them created for new courses, or updating those for courses due to run in the next academic year. You may be curious about what all the fuss is about and whether they even actually help our students find the things they need. If you’re a Course Organiser we’d love to encourage you to set up a list, if you haven’t already, and make it as helpful as possible for the incoming cohort. We’re keen to bust some myths which might be putting people off so let’s look at some common concerns below.


I’m too busy, I really don’t have time to make up a list or learn how Leganto works!

We appreciate the huge time pressure that our academic colleagues face, but it doesn’t mean you need to duplicate work or construct a list from scratch. Here are some ways we can help:

  • If the Course Organiser already has their reading list in a word document and can indicate priority on this (Essential/Recommended/Further Reading) then this can be sent to the Library via the online form and they will create the list.
  • If the materials which make up the reading list are contained in the Course Guide, or one or more other documents, handouts or presentations, we Law Librarians  will be happy to help collate these into a Resource List and work with COs to finalise the list.
  • If the Course Organiser has the time and wishes to, they can create the list themselves. Full guidance is available on the library website.

I’ve missed the deadline, is there any point in still submitting a list? 

Yes absolutely. The deadlines the Library sets for submission or review of Resource Lists is deliberately early so that they can guarantee to have lists and purchases ready for the start of teaching. However, missing the deadline should not be a reason not to create or review a list at all. Lists can be submitted at any time and the Library will do their best to get them ready as quickly as they possibly can. Lists submitted after the deadline will be dealt with first come, first served so there is a benefit to getting them in as early as possible! Where possible, Course Organisers are strongly encouraged to send their lists to the Library by the stated deadlines.

But I don’t know everything I’ll need right now. Some of my guest tutors may have things to add later. 

Lists are not set in stone once submitted to the library. Course Organisers can add to and amend the list at any time, even during teaching if necessary, but getting the bulk of your list organised now means it’s more likely to be ready before your students need it.

I am concerned that this is ‘spoonfeeding’ our students. If they get links to every resource they need, they won’t investigate on their own. 

There is no expectation that every possible resource related to the course topic will be included in the list. The Essential readings must be included, but the Course Organiser can choose to include Recommended and Further Readings as appropriate (with the caveat, of course, that items not included on lists can’t be taken into account in the Library’s planning for purchases and digital subscriptions, so they wouldn’t be able to guarantee availability).

Resource Lists foster student library skills, by keeping them within the Library ecosystem of tools and services rather than in Google Scholar or ChatGPT. Furthermore, the Library offers their LibSmart online course to help build these skills.

Use of a Resource List does not de-skill our students, or hinder the development of research skills. If one of the key tasks on a course is for students to research and discover materials by themselves, then of course those materials need not be included on the course Resource List. The key accessibility need is to remove barriers to students finding and engaging with their essential readings – the ones they cannot do without – and allowing them to plan their time accordingly (they are also under, at times, extreme pressure). Student feedback on Resource Lists demonstrates how much the system helps with this and how valuable our students find it.

I’ve never had a Resource List before and I don’t want one now. My methods of teaching have always been fine in the past! 

Providing a Resource List does not force a Course Organiser to change the way they teach. It simply provides the students with their readings and other resources in the same place and in a consistent way across all their courses, whichever School they might be in. In fact, use of the Resource List system frees up staff time, as they no longer need to provide and maintain their own lists of references and links – they can simply refer the students to the Resource List atthe appropriate places and have the Library review the list each year to keep it current.

Hmm, I’ll think about it, but I do have more questions.

We hope this has been convincing. We love Resource Lists here at the library because they help us keep our fingers on the pulse of what’s being used to teach. It helps us keep the Law Library stocked with the right texts for the right student numbers, which is of crucial importance to supporting our users in their study and research.

Bloomsbury Professional Ebooks: formerly on LexisLibrary

We want to alert students to a change we’re dealing with regarding Bloomsbury Professional ebooks which were formerly offered on the LexisLibrary platform.. Unfortunately going forward these will no longer be available on this database, and we’re working on access to them via Bloomsbury’s own platform instead.

The courses affected are mainly Property, Evidence, Criminal, Employment, and Contract Law, and the book titles are as follows:

While negotiations are ongoing with Bloomsbury (and until the end of May 2023) we’ll be able to access all of these titles using a trial they’ve given us to their own platform, providing students from 2022/23 access through the end of Semester Two exams. The procedure for finding these books is as follows:

  1. Visit the EResources Trials page
  2. Click on ‘Bloomsbury Professional Scots Law Titles’
  3. You will be prompted to log in with your usual username and password.
  4. You’ll arrive at a page that will give you the username and password to use on the Bloomsbury site
  5. Click the link to Bloomsbury (it helps to do this in a new tab or window so you can copy the log in details), then enter the username and password to log in.
  6. Use the navigation on the left hand side to access the title of the book you need.

This information has been added to the DiscoverEd records for these books, and I will also be circulating it via newsletters, blogs and other communication channels. Please do share this information with your classmates to assist them with their study or research if they require access to these books.

Getting resources not available in the Law Library Collections

We often get asked by students how they get access to a particular item that we do not have in the Law Library collection. So here are a few ideas about how and where to get access!

Online or in print?

Some items are available both online and in print, others are only available in one format. It is worthwhile searching to see if the item is available in another format.

It’s useful to check on the databases (especially Westlaw, Lexis and HeinOnline) to see if we have online access. Although some material from these databases is added to DiscoverEd- not everything is!

Some print copies of key texts are in other libraries across the university (as well as the law library) so it may be that the item you want is available in another location.

  • For items outside the central area you can place a hold and collect them centrally.
  • For items held in the central area you need to visit the holding library and borrow from there.

We do not add all print journal article details to DiscoverEd, so if you cannot find the article online then it’s worthwhile looking to see if we hold the print journal.

Scan and Deliver

If you cannot come on to campus (you are studying online or perhaps self-isolating) then you can request a scan of a book chapter or journal article be emailed to you. There are limits (due to copyright law and if it has been requested previously) but the service has been well used during lockdown periods.

The library does not post out books to users, so if you want a full print book you would need to come in and borrow the item. Full detail of the service are at:

Interlibrary loans

Interlibrary loans (ILLs) are where you request an item and we see if we can borrow it on your behalf from a partner library. On campus students can request journal articles and book chapter scans and also print books (which will be collectable from a campus library). Online students can request book chapter scans and journal articles.

For journal articles and book chapters we request a scan and send it via email. There is a limit per academic year about how many you can request, but usually the amount is sufficient. The library does not post out books to users. Full detail are at:

Borrowing locally from another library

If you are living in/near Edinburgh then joining the National Library of Scotland might be an option. The National Library has access to the Advocates Library collection, which is an extensive legal collection.  Full details of how to join are at:

Requesting a purchase for the library

Students can request that the Library purchases an book for research or study. The Request a Book scheme (RaB) has been running for several years and the majority of the items requested have been purchased. Library staff may get back in touch with questions or suggestions depending on the item and the cost, but more often than not items are purchased. Full details are at:

Finding International Legal Resources

Following on from our last post about Finding Material for your Research and Study, we’ve just recorded a new video to introduce some of the databases we subscribe to for international law. If this is an area that is relevant to your study, grab a cup of tea and spend eight and a half minutes finding out more about how library subscription services can support your work.

Finding Journals and Law Reports

Law reports and journal articles become increasingly important as students progress through their studies and research, and finding them can be tricky at times.

The library has access to a plethora of reports and journals but not everything is available online. Although we continually look for online access wherever it is available there is material that we can only receive in print.

The main places to get online access to law reports and journals is through our legal databases – mainly Westlaw, LexisLibrary and HeinOnline.

The Law Subject guide includes a section on Law Reports and access to eBooks. There is also information on the hierarchy of law reports to help students decide which reference to use when citing cases.

What to do if we do not have full online access?

Students often contact us asking why they can only get an abstract to the item they want in the online databases. This is because we do not get full text (full online) access to everything within all the databases. Sometimes we only have access to the bibliographic details such as the reference and abstract. So how can you get a copy of the full item?

Staff and students can use the interlibrary loan service to request items. This service involves us requesting material from partner libraries. There is a limit on how much can be requested and full details are on the interlibrary loan pages:

In Edinburgh staff and students also can get access to the National Library of Scotland who have a great range of resources available from their own collection and also through their relationship with the Faculty of Advocates’ Library.

Media Hopper, aka UoE YouTube!

If you’ve attended any of the induction sessions we’ve run in the past few weeks, you’ll have heard us mention Media Hopper (and specifically the Law Librarian Media Hopper Channel) many times as part of our introductory material.

Okay, but what is it?

Media Hopper is like the University’s own version of Youtube. It’s an online storage repository and player for videos, and it means we can upload videos and recordings that you can watch to find out about more about library services, subscription databases, and many other resources. If you study online you may be used to watching videos or pre-recorded lectures that have been made for you on your course; the great thing about Media Hopper is that it’s not just for your coursework, it can be for other things too!

What does the Library use it for then?

Loads of things! We upload recordings of sessions, promotional videos for our online information skills course, and demonstrations of databases. We can also create playlists which link together useful videos on popular themes. For example, on the Law Librarian channel we have the following:

  • Recordings of the introductory sessions we offer for UG, PG and PhD students
  • Westlaw demonstration (with more databases demos to come)
  • Using Legal Databases training
  • Using news databases
  • Simple search in DiscoverEd
  • Referencing help, including demonstrations of the latest version of Endnote.

Click & Collect comes to the Law Library

The Law Library now is part of the Click & Collect Service!

The Click & Collect service has been expanding since it’s launch in Feb 2021. As of 29th March 2021 staff and students are able to place Click & Collect requests for print material from the Law Library collections.

The Law Library resources are in addition to those already available from the Main Library, New College Library, ECA Library and University Collections Facilities. Items based at other site libraries are not yet available for Click & Collect.

To order a book collection using the service:

  • Place your request through DiscoverEd.
  • You can order up 3 Click & Collect items at any one time. The maximum number of requests covers your total current Click & Collect requests.
  • All items requested should be collected from the Main Library as the Law Library remains closed.
  • Staff will undertake retrievals of items requested from the Law Library once a week (Tuesdays). So depending on when you place your request it may mean that it may take over a week for you to receive an email notification that your requested item is available for collection.
  • Once you have received an email notification that your requested Law Library item is available you should make a booking to collect your item from the Main Library.

New Resources

Throughout the year the Law Librarians purchase new materials – sometimes following requests, and other times to ensure that new editions of established and key texts are available to staff and students. This part of our work has been especially busy this last year as learning and teaching has gone online!

Requests are received from students, staff and colleagues from across the Law School. Some are related to specific courses, but many are to support the research undertaken by staff and students.

We thought we would take this opportunity to let you know about a few of the new items we have recently ordered and received in:

This last item is a 13 volume set comprising of around 9000 pages, making it an incredibly helpful resource on the topic of the history of the Kurdish people. Having access to this material makes Edinburgh one of a select number of universities who give access to their students and staff to this unique resource.


Staff and students can place requests directly using the online forms available on the Library webpages.

If we cannot purchase the item (may be it is an older edition, out of stock, or not available in the online format you want) then we recommend you use the Interlibrary Loan Request Service which allows us to try to source access from other libraries or academic institutions.

The problem with ebooks

Working and studying through the Coronavirus pandemic has meant that we’re more reliant on ebooks and other electronic resources than ever before. As much as we would have liked for this to be a seamless transition to hybrid learning, it’s been a struggle throughout the year to make sure that we have access to all the essential materials you need for your coursework.

One of the reasons that we’re not always able to provide ebook access is that publishers do not always make their material available electronically. They may do this for a number of reasons, one of which is that they are worried they will not make the same amount of profit from print book sales as they usually would. They may also make the price of the ebook much much higher than the price of an individual print book to compensate for this potential loss of sales. For us in the Law school, we have found problems where publishers make books only available if you purchase access to an entire database of resources, often for hundreds of thousands of pounds, when we only need access to a handful of ebooks. This is not a realistic way for us to purchase access – budgets for resources are limited and getting tighter every year.

Some academic librarians in the UK have joined forces to launch an investigation into this spike in ebook prices and limits to availability because it is seriously affecting the courses that universities are able to run. Last week it was announced that the Chartered Institute for Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) has petitioned the Competitions and Markets Authority to investigate this issue:

We wanted to draw your attention to these items so that you’re aware that action is being taken at a national level, and that librarians and academics are working hard to ensure that higher education institutions are not held to ransom over ebook access. The issues we’re facing here in Edinburgh are not unique, but they are very worrying.  We hope that the investigations that are now being proposed will result in fairer and more equitable access for all in future.
