Database trials – China Core Newspapers & The Eastern Miscellany

China Core Newspapers provides the full-text articles from 633 current newspapers in China from 2000 onwards. The database is updated daily. The trial can be accessed by going to the China Core Newspapers entry in the Library’s Databases A-Z list, or simply click here. The trial will end on 31 July 2018.

The Eastern Miscellany (《東方雜誌》) was an iconic periodical of the Commercial Press from 1904 to 1948. It is highly regarded as a very important resource for the study of the modern history of China. The database includes the full 44 volumes (819 issues), with over 30,000 articles, 12,000 pictures, and over 14,000 advertisements. Articles cannot be downloaded directly, but the full texts of the articles can be copied and pasted. To access the trial, please click here on the University network. The trial will also be advertised on the Library’s E-resources Trials website. The trial will end on 21 July 2018.

Trial of a huge range of Chinese resources from Superstar

The Library has arranged a free trial, until 31st October 2017, of several important full-text Chinese resources from the Superstar company (超星公司) which is provider of our currently subscribed databases Duxiu and Chinamass, both of which are in the Databases A-Z list. These resources range from Chinese classics, pre-1949 periodicals and books, to local gazetteers and academic journals since 1949. They are accessible on three different platforms:

  1. Special collections (专题图书馆 and 超星专题库). These two large sets of resources can be accessed on the Chinamaxx platform. . It contains a vast amount of Chinese classics and books on special subjects. Superstar historical documents (超星文史资料) is under a separate section and may be of special interest for regional studies. The following resources are available:

  2. Superstar journals (超星期刊)  which can be accessed on the Duxiu database platform. This resource contains over 6,500 full text post-1949 Chinese journals. Please also remember that we are subscribing to two Chinese journals already: China Academic Journals, and China Online Journals, both of which are in the Database list.
  3. Dacheng gu zhi dui (大成故纸堆). This is a huge database containing several series: 老旧刊(pre-1949, 7491 periodicals),民国图书(39,950 books published before 1949),《申报》(1872-1942),古方志集(3566) ,党史(208 Communist Party publications before 1949), 《顺天时报》(1907-1930),《大美晚报》(1943-1946).This database is to be accessed from: www.dachengdata.com on the University network.

70,000 high-quality images from National Palace Museum in Taipei

BBC News reported yesterday that the National Palace Museum in Taipei has placed 70,000 high-quality electronic images in a free-to-download archive so that online users can enjoy its exhibitions. It also provides a database for users to download information on the history and use of the cultural artefacts.

Database for the History of Contemporary Chinese Political Movements

chinese-political-movementsThe Library has arranged a free trial of the Database for the History of Contemporary Chinese Political Movements, 1949 – 1976. The resource is published by the Chinese University in Hong Kong.

The database contains the full-text primary sources for the following four Chinese political movements after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949:

  1. The political campaigns in the 1950sthe Chinese cultural revolution (1966-1976)from land reform to the state-private partnership (1949-1956)
  2. The Great Leap Forward and great feminine (1958-1964)
  3. The Anti-Rightest Campaign (1957- )
  4. The Cultural Revolution (1966-1976)

Chinese database for trial

We have been offered a free trial of 大成故纸堆 which contains a vast amount of full-text material for Chinese studies. The trial can be accessed on the University network by going to www.dachengdata.com. The trial finishes on 23rd October 2016.

The database is produced by the same company that supplies us with Duxiu and Chinamaxx. It contains the following categories of full-text material:

老旧期刊全文数据库 (containing over 7,000 full-text periodicals from the late Qing Dynasty to 1949. There are many titles that are not found in the Late Qing Periodicals 1833-1911 and Minguo periodicals 1911-1949 that we subscribe to.)

民国图书全文数据库 (39,000 digitised books published between 1911 and 1949)

中国各地古方志集 (3,400 local gazetteers published throughout China’s history before 1949, some dating back to Song Dynasty)

古籍文献全文数据库 (15,000 pre-modern and rare Chinese books)

中共党史期刊数据库 (200 full-text periodicals published by the Chinese Communist Party before 1949)

《申报》 1872-1949 全文数据库 (we have already purchased this resource – please see Database A-Z list)

Mango Languages – online language courses for trial

The University Library has arranged a free trial of an online language learning resource called “Mango Languages”. The service offers online interactive courses for learning over 70 languages, including almost all those that are taught at our University:

Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Danish, Finnish, French, Gaelic (Scottish), German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Swahili, Turkish, as well as Shakespeare English!

Mango Languages

It consists of two types of resources: Mango Conversations teaches through native-speaker dialogue, cultural insights, and critical thinking exercises, while Mango Premiere teaches foreign languages through the dialogue and culture found in full-length international films. Proprietary technology includes interactive subtitles and colour coding which allow learners t easily understand meaning, word order, and grammatical structures. Applications for mobile devices are also available through Google Play and App Store.

The trial is from now until 31 October 2016.

Literary Encyclopedia

The Literary Encyclopedia publishes biographies of major and minor writers; scholarly descriptions of all interesting texts written by these authors, including those often neglected; and a variety of descriptive and critical essays on literary, cultural and historical matters, which provide a finer understanding of the social contexts in which this writing was produced.  Includes coverage of English, American, German, Russian, Italian, French and Classical literatures, as well as substantial and increasing coverage of Hispanic, Japanese, Canadian, East European and various postcolonial literatures. (Other major literatures to be added as resources permit.)  Currently has about 7557 completed articles, with a total of about 15.77 million words with around 20-40 articles added to the Encyclopedia every month.

The Library has arranged a free trial of the LE, until 31/05/2016. The trial can be accessed via the E-Resources Trials website which also links to other database trials that can be of interest. Foreign Office Files for ChinaForeign Office Files for China provides access to the digitised archive of British Foreign Office files dealing with China, Hong Kong and Taiwan between 1919 and 1980. The complete files consist of six parts. We have purchased full content for the three parts covering 1949-1956. Files between 1919 and 1948 are now under trial which cover the following parts: 1919-1929: Kuomintang, CCP and the Third International; 1930-1937: The Long March, civil war in China and the Manchurian Crisis; and 1938-1948: Open Door, Japanese war and the seeds of communist victory. The formerly restricted British government documents include diplomatic dispatches, letters, newspaper cuttings, maps, reports of court cases, biographies of leading personalities, summaries of events and other diverse materials.

China: Culture and Society

China Culture and SocietySpanning three centuries (c. 1750-1929), this resource makes available for the first time extremely rare pamphlets from Cornell University Library’s Charles W. Wason Collection on East Asia, one of the oldest and most distinctive collections of its kind and a very rich source for research on China for teachers and students from undergraduate-level to research-level and beyond.  Digitised in its entirety and in full colour, the Wason collection of c. 1,200 pamphlets encompasses speeches, guides, reports, essays, catalogues, magazine articles and other material addressing Chinese history, culture, and everyday life. The resource is full-text searchable, allowing for the collection to be comprehensively explored and studied. The wide variety of research interests and themes covered by the pamphlets include education, emigration, the foreign presence, missionaries, wars, rebellion, reform, opium, healthcare and language.  *Please note that PDF download options are not available during trials.
