PrintThis year’s Fairtrade Fortnight runs from 23 February to 8 March 2015 and is celebrating the power of everyday choices by telling the other half of a product’s story – the producer’s – to show the difference Fairtrade makes.

For the past twenty years Fairtrade Fortnight has aimed to educate the public on why to choose Fairtrade and increase sales on Fairtrade terms for marginalised producers. And this year they want people to “choose products that change lives”.

We’ve pulled together a list of resources, primarily available at the University Library, to help you read around or find out more about this subject. Online material, such as e-books and e-journal articles and access to Searcher and other databases, are only available to staff and students at University of Edinburgh unless otherwise indicated. Trial access to The Encyclopedia of Political Thought

IFThe Library has set up trial access to the online version of The Encyclopedia of Political Thought. You can access this via the E-resources trials page at www.ed.ac.uk/is/databases-trials

Blank BookThe Encyclopedia of Political Thought examines the history of political thought, contemporary political theory, and political philosophy. The entries range in size from shorter definitions and biographies to extended treatments of major topics and traditions. Tracing the evolution of political thinking from antiquity to the present, the scope of this resource emphasizes the richness and diversity of the field’s traditions.

Trial access is available until 25th March 2015. We would welcome feedback on these resources as this helps with making the decision on whether the resources should be considered for subscription or not.

#16days lecture at University of Edinburgh: further reading and research

IFToday, Monday 8th December, the School of Social and Political Science, in partnership with Scottish Women’s Aid and PeaceWomen is holding a 16 Days Lecture. The lecture is being delivered by feminist researcher and writer Cynthia Cockburn and is titled Male violence against women: links between peace and war.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign that started on 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on 10 December, Human Rights Day. The campaign hopes to raise awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international level.

Ladies in the Lords: Chrystal Macmillan Lecture Oct 2014

On Thursday 30th October the Lord Speaker Baroness D’Souza will deliver the Chrystal Macmillan Lecture on the topic of Ladies in the Lords: Women’s Representation in Political Life.

house_of_lordsToday there are 189 women in the House but it is only since the 1958 Life Peerages Act that women (as well as those without an inherited title) were allowed to sit in the House of Lords.

We’ve put together just a short reading list of journal articles available online through the University Library that allow you to read about and around this particular topic. So if you are unable to attend the Lecture or just wish to find out a bit more then read on. Access only available to University of Edinburgh students and staff unless otherwise noted.
