ProQuest E-Resources on Trial

We are trialling the following 3 collections until the 30th November.  Access the trials via DiscoverEd or our trials webpage.

CaptureCapture2The Cecil Papers is a collection of documents, principally from the reigns of Elizabethan I and James I/VI, privately held by the Gascoyne-Cecil family at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. The Cecil Papers contains nearly 30,000 documents gathered by William Cecil (1521-98), Lord Burghley and his son Robert Cecil (1563-1612), First Earl of Salisbury. Occupying some of the highest offices of state in the land (both men were Secretary of State to Elizabeth I and Robert Cecil also served her successor, James), these two men were at the heart of events during one of the most dynamic periods in Western history.  Further details can be found at http://media2.proquest.com/documents/cecil_papers.pdf.

CaptureCapture2Colonial State Papers offers insight into the colonial history of North America and the West Indies. It includes the National Archives collection CO 1– papers that were presented to the Privy Council and the Board of Trade during 1574-1757. More than 7,000 hand-written documents and more than 45,000 bibliographic records give fascinating insight into British trade, history and overseas expansion between the 16th and 18th centuries.  Further details can be found at http://media2.proquest.com/documents/csp.pdf.

CaptureCapture2Trench Journals and Unit Magazines of the First World War is an archival research resource containing a vast collection of rare magazines by and for servicemen and women of all nations during the First World War. Over 1,500 periodicals written and illustrated by serving members of the armed forces and associated welfare organisations published between 1914 and the end of 1919 are included. Magazines have been scanned cover-to-cover, in full colour or greyscale, and with granular indexing of all articles and specialist indexing of Publications.  Further details can be found at http://media2.proquest.com/documents/trench.pdf.

JSTOR – additional content now available

jstor_logo

We now subscribe to JSTOR Arts & Sciences XIII and Arts & Sciences XIV packages.

The Arts & Sciences XIII Collection adds an increasingly international set of journals in disciplines including Language & Literature, Art & Art History, Philosophy, and Religion. Represented subdisciplines include European church history and the literature of the American West.  The collection offers a global scope. European countries including Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands each contribute several titles, with an additional title published in South Korea, the Journal of Korean Religions.  The collection will contain at least 125 titles by completion.

The Arts & Sciences XIV Collection brings together more than 125 journals devoted to the study of culture and communication, from civilization’s earliest traces to the growth and governance of peoples. All titles are new to the JSTOR platform at the time of launch. Journals in the collection span 17 countries, 23 disciplines, and date back to 1839. They are drawn primarily from the fields of Archaeology, Language & Literature, Communications Studies, Asian Studies, and Political Science.  As this collection was only released last month, not all titles are online yet – these will be added to our catalogue/A-Z list as they become available.

See http://www.jstor.org/action/collectionsAvailable for title lists.  We have added the individual e-journals currently available to our e-journal A-Z list and they will be added to our catalogue/searcher soon.

Wireless access to e-resources

We are receiving a number of reports about loss of access to e-resources via the wifi network (Eduroam).  If affected please use the library links which are set up to pass through our EZProxy server or the VPN rather than accessing the e-resource directly.

Access the e-journals A-Z, e-books A-Z, databases A-Z, catalogue or searcher webpages here: http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/information-services/library-museum-gallery/finding-resources

Downtime Alert – E-Journals

At 10pm tonight, our e-journals will become unavailable for about 1 hour via the e-journal A-Z links, Searcher and the catalogue.  This maintenance work is expected to resolve recent instability issues affecting e-journal access.

During this time, please access the journals directly on campus or off campus via the VPN or by adding http://ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/login?url=  to the front of a url eg for nature journal, the link is http://www.nature.com and then add http://ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/login?url= to make it http://ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/login?url=http://www.nature.com which will then work off campus.  There is also the option to log in off campus via UKFederation/Shibboleth if offered by the publisher.

Access alert – e-journals unavailable

Our e-journals are currently unavailable via A-Z library links, Searcher and the catalogue.  This is being investigated by our IT staff.

In the meantime, please access the journals directly on campus or off campus via the VPN or by adding http://ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/login?url=  to the front of a url eg for nature journal, the link is http://www.nature.com and then add http://ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/login?url= to make it http://ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/login?url=http://www.nature.com which will then work off campus.  There is also the option to log in off campus via UKFederation/Shibboleth if offered by the publisher.
