International Women’s Day 2015: Make it Happen

iwd_longOn Sunday 8th March 2015 International Women’s Day (IWD) will be celebrated worldwide. IWD has been observed since the early 1900s and has been sponsored by the United Nations (UN) since 1975. It is an important occasion for promoting women’s issues and rights, especially in developing countries.

This year’s theme is Make it Happen and there are many events happening at the University this year to mark IWD 2015.

The University’s annual International Women’s Day Lecture takes place on Friday 6th March and this year welcomes guest speaker Professor Anneila Sargent. Make it Happen – Women into Science will draw from Professor Sargent’s own experiences to discuss the challenges many women may face when entering a career in science. PrintThis year’s Fairtrade Fortnight runs from 23 February to 8 March 2015 and is celebrating the power of everyday choices by telling the other half of a product’s story – the producer’s – to show the difference Fairtrade makes.

For the past twenty years Fairtrade Fortnight has aimed to educate the public on why to choose Fairtrade and increase sales on Fairtrade terms for marginalised producers. And this year they want people to “choose products that change lives”.

We’ve pulled together a list of resources, primarily available at the University Library, to help you read around or find out more about this subject. Online material, such as e-books and e-journal articles and access to Searcher and other databases, are only available to staff and students at University of Edinburgh unless otherwise indicated. Trial access to The Encyclopedia of Political Thought

IFThe Library has set up trial access to the online version of The Encyclopedia of Political Thought. You can access this via the E-resources trials page at www.ed.ac.uk/is/databases-trials

Blank BookThe Encyclopedia of Political Thought examines the history of political thought, contemporary political theory, and political philosophy. The entries range in size from shorter definitions and biographies to extended treatments of major topics and traditions. Tracing the evolution of political thinking from antiquity to the present, the scope of this resource emphasizes the richness and diversity of the field’s traditions.

Trial access is available until 25th March 2015. We would welcome feedback on these resources as this helps with making the decision on whether the resources should be considered for subscription or not.

This summer the Library is launching a new Discovery service which will combine the functionality of the Library Catalogue and Searcher into one single search tool that will help you to easily discover the resources you need for your study and research.

The Library will be using Primo for the new discovery service but “Primo” is just the product name. We would like you to help name the service for our Library. Can RAB help you get the book you need?

Library doesn’t have a book that you want? Did you know as a student at the University you can request the Library buys books for its collections via the RAB (Request A Book) Service?

RAB_logoLast academic year, 2013/14, the Library purchased 940 books in response to RAB requests. 134 books were ordered directly from requests from students in Social & Political Science, this made approximately 12% of the total requests from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
