New Books at New College Library – March (recommended by students)

Student recommendations are in at New College Library! New in this month is Newman and his family, by Edward Short, available as an ebook via the library catalogue. Also new is The Oxford guide to the historical reception of Augustine, by Karla Pollmann, at Folio BR65.A9 Oxf.

Students are encouraged to recommend books for the library using the online form at http://www.ed.ac.uk/is/RAB.

You can see an regularly updated list of new books for New College Library on the Library Catalogue – choose the New Books Search and limit your search to New College Library. Here’s a quick link to new books arriving in the last few weeks. A word of caution – some of the books listed here may still be in transit between the Main Library (where they are catalogued) and New College Library, so not on the shelf just yet.

Divinity Student Recommendations now available

Divinity students have been active in recommending new books for the library, some of which are being made available as e-books. Here’s just two of the titles they recommended.

New this month is Echoes of the call : identity and ideology among American missionaries in Ecuador / by Jeffrey Swanson, available online to University of Edinburgh users. Currently in the New College Library new books display is The Ending of Time, by J. Krishnamurti.

Students can recommend books using the online Request a Book form for students. You can see an regularly updated list of new books for New College Library on the Library Catalogue – choose the New Books Search and limit your search to New College Library.

New College Library welcomes Postgraduate Freshers today

New College Library holds over 250,000 volumes, including rich and valuable Special Collections, making it one of the leading theological libraries in Britain. In addition to the books there are online collections – electronic journals, electronic books and databases which the University subscribes to support your studies and research. As the New College Librarian, my role is to help students get the most out of using the Library. Freshers Week is a good opportunity to take a little time to get to know the Library – do this now and you’ll be paid back later on in your studies.

Here’s my top tips for Postgraduate Freshers to get to know New College Library:

1. Come to the Library

Bring your University card to get into New College Library
From next week the Library is open 9am-6pm-10 Mon-Thurs, 9am-5pm Fridays, 12noon – 5pm on Saturdays. Remember that you can also use the Main Library which is open longer at weekends

2. Take a tour

You should have received a New College Library Guide leaflet in your welcome pack – it’s also available online.

Get Connected with University of Edinburgh Information Services

Get Connected drop in sessions for Freshers Week are running in the Main Library mezzanine (above the entrance gates) on 9th-13th September between 10am-4pm. No appointments necessary, just turn up.

Take the opportunity to connect up your own personal devices e.g. laptops, phones and tablets/pads to the University network. Staff will be on hand to help and guide you – I’ll be there myself 1-2pm.

A big welcome to all students starting and returning to the University of Edinburgh today, at the beginning of Freshers week 2013. We’re looking forward to meeting you. To help you get started at University, check out this guide for new students to Library & IT services.

New online EndNote course now available

The IS Skills Development team in Information Services has released an online course to help University of Edinburgh staff and students get started with the reference management software, EndNote. The course is available through Learn, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) as a self-enrol course. Learn can be accessed by MyEd.

There’s still time to book a place on Searching Research Literature and Managing Bibliographies course run by the Institute for Academic Development for College of Humanities and Social Sciences postgraduate students. Go here to book a place (link only works for eligible students).

I’ll be co-tutoring on this course, with a mixture of presentations and hands on practical computer-based sessions.

Aimed at first year HSS PhD students, this course offers information and techniques to equip students with the essential skills for PhD research. We cover search tips and strategies for databases, good practice in literature searching and managing bibliographies using Endnote.

: Chong, Kelly H., 1964- Deliverance and submission : evangelical women and the negotiation of patriarchy in South Korea / Harvard University Press, 2008

: Brown, Peter, 1935- Through the eye of a needle [electronic resource] : wealth, the fall of Rome, and the making of Christianity in the West, 350-550 AD / Princeton University Press, 2012.

: Letham, Robert. The Westminster Assembly : reading its theology in historical context / P & R Publishing, 2009.

All these books (and more) were recommended by Divinity students and are now available to University of Edinburgh Library users – more details on the library catalogue. 100+ book recommendations from Divinity students have been received over the last four months, via the student recommendation form on the Library website.

New books at New College Library – March

New College Library has a regular display of new books at the far end of the Library Hall, close to the door to the stacks.

Currently in the display is The good Muslim : reflections on classical Islamic law and theology by Mona Siddiqui. Professor Mona Siddiqui, Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at the School of Divinity, will deliver her Inaugural Lecture ‘Love and Law in Christianity and Islam‘ today, Monday 4 March 2013 at St Cecilia’s Hall.

Also new is The lovelorn ghost and the magical monk : practicing Buddhism in modern Thailand by Daniel McJustin. These titles were purchased for Religious Studies at the School of Divinity, Edinburgh University.

New College Library has a regular display of new books at the far end of the Library Hall, close to the door to the stacks. We have a bumper crop this month so please do stop and have a look if you’re in the library.

A new title already out on loan is After imperialism : Christian identity in China and the global evangelical movement edited by Richard R. Cook and David W. Pao, 2011 (NCL BR1285 Aft. ) This book was purchased for World Christianity, recommended by a PhD student.

Also new is The cross in the dark valley : the Canadian Protestant missionary movement in the Japanese Empire, 1931-1945, by A. Hamish Ion, another recommendation from a Divinity postgraduate student.
