Introduction

In 2013 the School of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh celebrates its 300th anniversary. Since 1713, the School has been central in shaping the science that we recognise as chemistry today, seeding chemistry departments around the world, producing distinguished alumni and pioneering innovations in technology and in learning and teaching. The Cradle of Chemistry exhibition is a celebration of the School’s remarkable achievements in the field of Chemistry as well as Scottish and international economy.

The exhibition is structured around four themes – ‘Nurture’ (how Edinburgh Chemistry has shaped the world), ‘Discovery’ (significant discoveries and innovations), ‘Enlightenment and Economy’ (contributions to economy and policy) and ‘Present and Future’ (current achievements and vision).
