The University of Edinburgh’s conservation studio is based within the Centre for Research Collections at the Main Library in George Square. Our remit is to support conservation and preservation activity across the many and diverse rare and unique collections held by the University. Emily Hick is the University’s Special Collections Conservator who, along with some unique insights from our guest bloggers, will be keeping you up-to-date and informed of the latest conservation news.
I recently made a short film in the National Library of Scotland’s conservation workshop which may be of interest to you.Over several weeks, I followed the work of Claire Thomson, conservator, as she worked on the conservation process of The Annals of the Artists of Spain’ by William Stirling Maxwell (1847), the first book on art to be illustrated with photographic images. It was effectively the first book on Art History.
