Not finding as much on your topic as you hoped? Look again at your search strategy.<\/h1>\n<p>By this I mean identifying terminology and keywords \u2013 also geographical or date limits for your search . Revisit your starting point.<\/h1>\n<p>I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve already carried out some scoping searches. Where did you start to do these \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Scholar<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/discovered.ed.ac.uk\/primo-explore\/search?vid=44UOE_VU2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DiscoverEd<\/a>? Remember that in both of these discovery tools you can choose the Advanced Search function for more effective searching with multiple keywords or search strings. Try searching individual databases and digital collections.<\/h1>\n<p>Following a <a href=\"https:\/\/discovered.ed.ac.uk\/primo-explore\/search?vid=44UOE_VU2&amp;lang=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DiscoverEd<\/a> search, look in in the limiters at the left hand side of the page under \u2018Collection\u2019 to see what digital collections are providing results \u2013 these might be worth more detailed exploration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-52\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/DiscoverEd_Collection-300x238.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/DiscoverEd_Collection-300x238.png 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/DiscoverEd_Collection.png 342w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can also find lists of relevant databases in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/is\/databases-subjects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Subject Guides<\/a> for subject or school. Searching at individual database level can mean that you can access a subject thesaurus with terms purpose built for your subject area enabling more effective searching than keyword matching alone can provide. Plus, many databases \u2013 especially <a href=\"https:\/\/edinburgh-uk.libguides.com\/newspapers-magazines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">newspapers<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 are subscription resources behind powerful paywalls that large scale discovery tools like Google\u00a0just can\u2019t get into. To get at their content you need to go to the source database.<\/p>\n<h1>4. Journal literature just not there for you?<\/h1>\n<p>You may be looking for \u2018grey literature\u2019 \u2013 information produced by government, academics, business and industry in formats not controlled by commercial publishing. To help find this, as well as\u00a0a guide to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/database-official-public\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Official Publications<\/a>, Edinburgh University Library\u2019s subject guides have a useful list of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/database-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statistical information sources<\/a>. Other handy places to look are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greynet.org\/greynethome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greynet,<\/a>\u00a0the Grey literature network service, or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opengrey.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenGrey<\/a>\u00a0for grey literature in Europe. Perhaps you\u2019re interested in finding theses \u2013 see the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/theses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Theses subject guide<\/a> for sources to download digital theses.<\/p>\n<p>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/advanced_search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Advanced Search<\/a> to search for grey literature on specific companies, organisations, charitites, etc., websites.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-54\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/Google_AdvancedSearch-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/Google_AdvancedSearch-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/Google_AdvancedSearch-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/Google_AdvancedSearch-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/Google_AdvancedSearch-400x300.png 400w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/yourdissertation\/files\/2019\/11\/Google_AdvancedSearch.png 1180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>5. Finally, you&#8217;ve found something really useful?<\/h1>\n<p>Try snowballing \u2013 follow up the subject keywords given to the article, or the references that it cites, to find related material. Some databases, such as Web of Science (and Google Scholar) have a citation trail function where you can look ahead to see who went on to cite the paper you are reading \u2013 see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.docs.is.ed.ac.uk\/docs\/Libraries\/PDF\/worksheetcitedref.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tracking a Good Article<\/a>\u00a0to find out more.<\/p>\n<p>Need more help?
