Burt the Chair of Comparative Genomics at the Roslin Institute, Midlothian, Scotland, wrote several articles on the successes of mapping the avian genome through the project the International Poultry Genome Mapping Project and the creation of the public database, ChickGBASE \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/DCn2c\">http:\/\/archive.is\/DCn2c<\/a>) \u00a0that was established at the Roslin Institute to \u2018provide access to a summary of chicken gene mapping data.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4160.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-864\" alt=\"IMG_4160\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4160-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4160-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4160-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4160-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4160.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In the article, \u2018Chicken genome mapping: a new era in avian genetics\u2019 by Burt, Bumstead, Bitgood, Ponce de Leon and Crittenden, <i>Trends in Genetics<\/i> (May 1995, Vol. 11, No. 5), they note that the \u2018first linkage map of the chicken, which was also the first linkage map reported for any domestic farm animal species, was published in 1936 by Hutt\u2019 and there were updates by other scientists over the years.<\/p>\n<p>There are multiple articles by Burt and others on the progress made with avian gene\u00a0mapping in the Roslin Institute\u2019s 1995 offprint series and what\u2019s fascinating to see is how the advances in biotechnology has aided their efforts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-865\" style=\"color: #333333;font-style: normal;line-height: 24px\" alt=\"IMG_4155\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4155-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4155-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4155-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4155-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2013\/10\/IMG_4155.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>According to Burt\u2019s report in the\u00a0Roslin Institute\u2019s <i>Annual Report 1994-1995<\/i>, the next challenge that they faced was to \u2018locate and identify the defective gene in this (talpid3) mutant\u2019 and that \u2018a \u201cpositional cloning\u201d approach could be used in which the talpid genetic locus itself is cloned and genes within that DNA are tested.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1995 David W.
