has invited myself, Dr Mhairi Towler,\u00a0and Dr. Paul Harrison (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulliamharrison.co.uk\/\">http:\/\/www.paulliamharrison.co.uk<\/a>) to contribute a guest blog in relation to the work we have been carrying out\u00a0on\u00a0C.H Waddington.\u00a0 I have just completed a Masters in Animation and Visualisation at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee (<a href=\"http:\/\/mhairimastersproject.wordpress.com\/\">http:\/\/mhairimastersproject.wordpress.com\/<\/a>) and as part of this course studied under Dr. Harrison on placement at the Visual Research Centre, University of Dundee (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dundee.ac.uk\/djcad\/vrc\">http:\/\/www.dundee.ac.uk\/djcad\/vrc<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Dr. Harrison was invited to be involved as artist in residence with a newly funded FP7 European community-funded network of excellence entitled \u2018EpiGeneSys\u2019, which includes 22 partners across Europe (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epigenesys.eu\/\">http:\/\/www.epigenesys.eu<\/a>).\u00a0 EpiGeneSys combines interdisciplinary research into epigenetics and systems biology, and work is required to visualise this ground-breaking interaction in both a specialist and public context.\u00a0 Dr. Harrison&#8217;s project, \u2018Epigenetic Landscapes\u2019, fits into a work package on \u2018Science and Society\u2019, with the aim of developing a series of collaborative initiatives at network centres throughout Europe.\u00a0 Outputs, over a period of five years, will include several associated events and productions, such as exhibitions, workshops and publications \u2013 one of which will include a retrospective\/reappraisal of the work of Conrad Hal Waddington, who first established the term \u2018epigenetics\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During our exploration of Waddington\u2019s work we visited Special Collections\u00a0at Edinburgh University Library to gain inspiration from the Waddington archive held there, in order to develop animations.\u00a0 When writing about his concepts, Waddington regularly described them in\u00a0three dimensions; therefore it wasn\u2019t too difficult to get into his way of thinking and visualise illustrations in 3D form.\u00a0 From the archive,\u00a0two images were chosen to produce visual outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first was the famous, \u201cEpigenetic Landscape\u201d, described by Clare in <a title=\"Waddington\u2019s Epigenetic\u00a0Landscape\" href=\"http:\/\/towardsdolly.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/10\/waddingtons-epigenetic-landscape\/\" target=\"_blank\">a previous post.<\/a>\u00a0 This was developed into an animation with help from one of my classmates, Link Li.\u00a0 A still from the animation is shown below along with a photograph of the original:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-pic1-copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-392\" title=\"Epigenetic Landscapes\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-pic1-copy.jpg\" height=\"509\" width=\"584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-pic1-copy.jpg 681w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-pic1-copy-300x261.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-pic1-copy-624x544.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Secondly, an illustration of a lampbrush chromosome (a structure that forms inside a developing egg) from Waddington\u2019s 1956 book, <em>Principles of Embryology<\/em>, was used as the basis for a short animated film, <em>Chromonema<\/em>, made for my Masters project.\u00a0 Again, the original illustration from the archive and a still from the film are shown below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-chromonema1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-394\" title=\"Mhairi chromonema1\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-chromonema1.png?w=1024\" height=\"336\" width=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-chromonema1.png 1257w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-chromonema1-300x98.png 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-chromonema1-1024x336.png 1024w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/towardsdolly\/files\/2012\/11\/mhairi-chromonema1-624x205.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being able to access\u00a0the Waddington archive for this project was highly beneficial and gaining further insight into the life and work of Waddington was extremely interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Please see the following blog for further documentation of the project.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/placementmodule.wordpress.com\/\">http:\/\/placementmodule.wordpress.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
