W<\/span>e are excited to announce the work on our new Queering the Archive initiative. <\/span>This initiative aims to\u00a0<\/span>increase representation of LGBT+ records within our collections.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Queering the Archive will hope to <\/span><\/span>investigate<\/span><\/span> the gaps in our collections and cataloging<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to improve<\/span><\/span>\u00a0LGBT+ representation<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with aims for further development and active archiving in the future.<\/span><\/span> The initiative is a part of our 70<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Anniversary<\/span><\/span>\u00a0plans<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and will be included in a series of events over the rest of the year. The initiative will allow us to go forward in improving\u00a0<\/span>marginali<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0and underrepresented voices and material.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere are unfortunately little accounts of LGBT+ histories and recordings in the School of Scottish Studies Archives.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>In particular, there<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is little representation on queer folklore, folk narratives, or songs in a wider historical and archival setting.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>LGBT+ histories<\/span><\/span>\u00a0are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sometimes\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2018hidden\u2019 histories, either through historical context on discussion of LGBT+ identity and topics<\/span><\/span>, lack of archiving or archival interest, or a lack of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0appr<\/span><\/span>opriate and inclusive<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>search-terms<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and cataloging <\/span><\/span>that reflects<\/span><\/span>\u00a0queer identit<\/span><\/span>ies.

Queering the Archive will begin with an intervention and discussion workshop.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The workshop will provide a starting point to actively work with the community to <\/span>discuss our collections, representation, as well as crowd-source\u00a0<\/span>search-terms<\/span> for improvement of cataloging developed <\/span>by<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span><\/i>\u00a0the LGBT<\/span>+ community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Workshops will allow participants to engage with our records and active intervention through\u00a0<\/span>crowd-sourcing<\/span>\u00a0and discussion. I<\/span>t is<\/span>\u00a0our<\/span>\u00a0aim to work with the community, skill-share, and offer meaningful collaboration and discussion<\/span> as much as possible throughout the initiative<\/span>. It will introduce you to our collections, queer theory, and investigations into our LGBT+ and related records.<\/span><\/p>\n

Workshops will be completely free<\/strong> and led remotely via Zoom, and will utilise other platforms. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dates are to be announced.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

We will also be producing a series of blogs exploring the initiative and\u00a0<\/span>application of queer theory to our collections with further discussion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The next blog will explore queering the collections through the popular and infamous \u2018cross-dressing\u2019 ballads and exploring the queerness and issues of LGBT+ representation in the context of the selected ballads and traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

We will also be exploring the work ‘behind the scenes’ of Queering the Archive through our blogs and we will include other exciting material and updates!<\/span><\/p>\n
