We thought we&#8217;d give you a taster of social work resources available to students and staff here at the University of Edinburgh Library.<\/p>\n<p>1. Have you seen\u00a0<em><strong>Social Services Abstracts<\/strong><\/em>?\u00a0This database provides bibliographic coverage of current research focused on social work, human services and related areas, including social welfare, social policy and community development. The database abstracts and indexes thousands of serials publications and includes abstracts of journal articles and dissertations and citations to book reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Coverage includes community and mental health services; crisis intervention; the family and social welfare; gerontology; poverty and homelessness; professional issues in social work; social services in addiction; social work education; social work practice; violence, abuse, neglect.<\/p>\n<p>You can access this and other relevant databases at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/database-social-work\" target=\"_blank\">databases for social work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2015\/03\/social_services_abstracts.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-934\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2015\/03\/social_services_abstracts.jpg\" alt=\"IF\" width=\"405\" height=\"43\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2015\/03\/social_services_abstracts.jpg 405w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2015\/03\/social_services_abstracts-300x32.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>2. The Library has a large collection of books on various aspects of social work. Have a look on the 2nd floor of the Main Library for books with shelfmarks that begin with <strong>HV<\/strong>. <strong>HV<\/strong> covers books on social and public welfare, criminology and social pathology and you will find a large number of social work related titles within this shelfmark range. Use the <a href=\"http:\/\/catalogue.lib.ed.ac.uk\/vwebv\/searchBasic?sk=en_US\" target=\"_blank\">Library Catalogue<\/a> to find more books and remember that some books may be held in the HUB Collections on the ground floor, under the same shelfmarks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2015\/03\/social_work_domestic_violence_book_cover.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-936\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2015\/03\/social_work_domestic_violence_book_cover.jpg\" alt=\"social_work_domestic_violence_book_cover\" width=\"140\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. Find e-journals like the <em><strong>British Journal of Social Work<\/strong><\/em> by searching the <a href=\"http:\/\/catalogue.lib.ed.ac.uk\/vwebv\/searchBasic?sk=en_US\" target=\"_blank\">Library Catalogue<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/find-ejournal\/search-ejourn\" target=\"_blank\">e-journals list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2015\/03\/British_journal_social_work.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-932\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2015\/03\/British_journal_social_work.gif\" alt=\"British_journal_social_work\" width=\"117\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4. You can use some of the newspaper databases the Library subscribes to, such as <em><strong>Factiva<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Nexis UK<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Lexis Library<\/strong><\/em>, to search for full text news stories, editorials, comments, experts and popular opinions. Or you can use them to compare how different newspapers have been covering the same news story. Access these and other resources from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/database-newspapers\" target=\"_blank\">newspaper databases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Or why not take a look at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/help-consultancy\/ucreate\/facilities\/box-of-broadcasts\/overview\" target=\"_blank\">Box of Broadcasts (BoB)<\/a><\/strong> where you can view or listen to previously recorded TV or radio programmes from over 60 stations, you can also record programmes yourself, create clips and create playlists. From documentaries such as <em>Baby P: The Untold Story<\/em> and <em>Protecting Our Children<\/em> to film and TV depictions of social workers in <em>Tracy Beaker<\/em> or <em>Oranges and Sunshine<\/em>.
