{"id":544,"date":"2014-08-18T14:26:56","date_gmt":"2014-08-18T14:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/?p=544"},"modified":"2014-08-20T07:57:42","modified_gmt":"2014-08-20T07:57:42","slug":"top-five-library-resources-for-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/2014\/08\/18\/top-five-library-resources-for-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"Top five library resources for Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s one month to go until the Scottish Referendum and as Scotland is gearing up to decide its future and politics dominates the news we thought we\u2019d give you a taster of political science resources available to students and staff here at University of Edinburgh Library.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0Why not have a look at the <em><strong>House of Commons Parliamentary Papers<\/strong><\/em> for documents relating to the previous Scottish devolution referendums? The 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st Century House of Commons Parliamentary Papers contains bibliographic records and searchable full text for papers printed between 1688-2004. It also includes Hansard 1803-2005. The collection does not include the House of Commons Journal, or daily business papers, such as Order papers and Votes and Proceedings, nor does it include Acts. You can access this and other relevant databases at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/database-politics\" target=\"_blank\">databases for Politics<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/house_of_commons.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-546\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/house_of_commons.jpg\" alt=\"IF\" width=\"760\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/house_of_commons.jpg 760w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/house_of_commons-300x88.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/house_of_commons-500x147.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>2. The Library has a large collection of books on various aspects of political science. Have a look on the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> floor of the Main Library for books with shelfmarks that begins with <strong>J<\/strong>. <strong>J<\/strong> is for Political Science (we never said Library of Congress shelfmarks would stand up to scrutiny by Sesame Street!) but this includes <strong>JC<\/strong> (political theory), <strong>JS<\/strong> (local government), <strong>JX<\/strong> (international law), <strong>JZ<\/strong> (international relations), etc. Use the <a href=\"http:\/\/catalogue.lib.ed.ac.uk\/vwebv\/searchBasic?sk=en_US\" target=\"_blank\">Library Catalogue<\/a> to find more books and remember that some books may be held in the HUB Collections on the ground floor, under the same shelfmarks.<a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/broken_branch_politics_book_cover.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-548\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/broken_branch_politics_book_cover.jpg\" alt=\"broken_branch_politics_book_cover\" width=\"133\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. Find e-journals like <em><strong>Nations and Nationalism<\/strong><\/em> by searching the <a href=\"http:\/\/catalogue.lib.ed.ac.uk\/vwebv\/searchBasic?sk=en_US\" target=\"_blank\">Library Catalogue<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/find-ejournal\/search-ejourn\" target=\"_blank\">e-journals list<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/nations_nationalism.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-550\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/nations_nationalism.jpg\" alt=\"IF\" width=\"776\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/nations_nationalism.jpg 776w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/nations_nationalism-300x28.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/08\/nations_nationalism-500x48.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 776px) 100vw, 776px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4. You can use some of the newspaper databases the Library subscribes to, such as <em><strong>Lexis Library<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Nexis UK<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Factiva<\/strong><\/em> to search for news stories, editorials, commentaries, expert or popular opinions. Access these and other resources from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/database-newspapers\" target=\"_blank\">newspaper databases<\/a>. Or why not take a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/help-consultancy\/ucreate\/facilities\/box-of-broadcasts\/overview\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Box of Broadcasts (BoB)<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>where you can view or listen to previously recorded TV or radio programmes from over 60 stations, you can also record programmes yourself, create clips and create playlists.<a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/03\/BoB2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/03\/BoB2.jpg\" alt=\"BoB2\" width=\"339\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/03\/BoB2.jpg 339w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/spslibrarian\/files\/2014\/03\/BoB2-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>5.
