LGBT+ History Month may be near the end but I wanted to highlight just some of the library resources available to staff and students of the University that will allow you to study and research LGBT+ history further.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Books, journals, articles, etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Main Library is co-hosting a &#8216;micro-exhibition&#8217; with student groups <a href=\"https:\/\/projectmyopia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project Myopia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eusa.ed.ac.uk\/representation\/campaigns\/academic\/liberated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LiberatEd<\/a> with a\u00a0pop-up book display on the ground floor this week. A <a href=\"https:\/\/eu01.alma.exlibrisgroup.com\/leganto\/public\/44UOE_INST\/lists\/17228914570002466?auth=SAML\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>LGBT+ History Month Resource List<\/strong><\/a> has also been put together to highlight the wide range of LGBT+ books available at the University Library. Or you can go further in your research by using some of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> bibliographic databases<\/strong> <\/a>the Library has access to that will allow you to search for journal articles, abstracts, book reviews, book chapters, reports and proceedings, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. With 1000s of videos already available on the site, around 400 new titles are added to the site every month. From documentaries such as <em>Queer as Art<\/em>, <em>Prejudice and Pride: The People&#8217;s History of LGBTQ Britain<\/em>, <em>Stonewall Uprising<\/em>, <em>Queerama<\/em>, <em>I&#8217;m Coming Out<\/em> or <em>Young, Trans and Looking for Love<\/em> to films such as<em> Milk<\/em>, <em>Breakfast on Pluto<\/em>, <em>Carol<\/em>, <em>Hedwig and the Angry Inch<\/em>, <em>Beautiful Thing<\/em>, <em>The Danish Girl<\/em>, <em>Happy Together<\/em> or <em>Cabaret<\/em> (and they are just a small number of the programmes available, search <strong>BoB<\/strong> for more).<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Why not try searching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk\/login?url=http:\/\/search.proquest.com\/americanperiodicals?accountid=10673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>American Periodicals<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk\/login?url=http:\/\/search.proquest.com\/britishperiodicals\/history\/fromDatabasesLayer?accountid=10673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>British Periodicals<\/strong> <\/a>or an individual title&#8217;s archive, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk\/login?url=http:\/\/search.proquest.com\/vogue?accountid=10673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Vogue Archive<\/em><\/strong><\/a> to see how magazines were talking about and reporting on LGBT+ rights and issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Want to look at more recent coverage LGBT+ issues and stories?<\/em> <\/strong>The Library also subscribes to databases, such as <strong>Factiva<\/strong> and <strong>Nexis UK<\/strong>, that allow you to search and access the full text of a large number of UK and international newspapers from around the 1980s up to date. You can access these, the databases mentioned above and many other newspaper archives and magazine archives from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/database-newspapers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newspaper &amp; Magazines Databases<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. What do the archives tell us?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Primary sources reflect the individual viewpoint of a participant or observer and they enable you to get as close as possible to what actually happened during an historical event or time period. Politics, Social Activism and Community Support: Selected Gay and Lesbian Periodicals and Newsletters from Archives Unbound.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This collection of periodicals from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk\/login?url=http:\/\/go.galegroup.com\/gdsc\/start.do?p=GDSC&amp;u=ed_itw&amp;authCount=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archives Unbound<\/a><\/strong> focuses on newsletters issued by gay and lesbian political and social activist organizations throughout the United States and on periodicals devoted to gay and lesbian political and social activist agendas &#8211; the &#8220;public&#8221; face of gay and lesbian activism. In addition, this collection includes serial literature on its &#8220;private&#8221; face, exploring the challenges and complexities of building gay and lesbian communities inside and outside of a &#8220;straight&#8221; world, the need for psychological reinforcement through support groups in an effort combat an often hostile environment, and the yearning for spiritual confirmation of one\u2019s identity and life choices. The collection is sourced from the\u00a0Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered (GLBT) Historical Society in San Francisco and covers the years 1947-2004.<\/p>\n<p>The above database is just one of 265 primary source collections available to you via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk\/login?url=http:\/\/go.galegroup.com\/gdsc\/start.do?p=GDSC&amp;u=ed_itw&amp;authCount=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Archives Unbound<\/strong><\/a>. It presents topically-focused digital collections of historical documents covering\u00a0a broad range of topics from the Middle Ages forward-from Witchcraft to World War II to 20th century political history.<\/p>\n<p>Also within <strong>Archives Unbound<\/strong> you may want to look at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Homophile Movement: Papers of Donald Stewart Lucas, 1941-1976<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In Response to the the AIDS Crisis<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Phyllis Lyon, Del Martin and the Daughters of Bilitis<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin: Beyond the Daughters of Bilitis<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As <strong>Archives Unbound<\/strong> covers such a vast range of subjects and collections, searching through the whole database will provide material perhaps from some surprising areas (so it\u2019s very worthwhile doing this).<\/p>\n<p>You can access <strong>Archives Unbound<\/strong> and a large number of other primary source databases covering various different time periods and events via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/primary-sources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Primary Source database list<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. In the University Library&#8217;s own archives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Edinburgh holds world class <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.ed.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collections<\/a>, including rare books, archives and manuscripts, art, historical musical instruments and museum objects.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/crc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Research Collections (CRC)<\/a> on the 6th floor of the Main Library is your gateway into these unique collections and through them you can access the <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.collections.ed.ac.uk\/repositories\/2\/archival_objects\/55356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University&#8217;s BLOGS (Bisexual, Lesbian, or Gay Society) archives<\/a> from\u00a0November 1973 to June 1999. LHSA Ref: GD22<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lhsa.lib.ed.ac.uk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lothian Health Services Archives (LHSA)<\/a> are also part of the University&#8217;s collections. LHSA holds 11 individual collections, covering the period 1983-2010, which chart the unprecedented rise of HIV\/AIDS in Edinburgh and Lothian.\u00a0 They document the medical and social responses to the disease at a local level combining the records of the NHS, local government, charities and campaign groups; and demonstrate the external approach subsequently taken to tackle the disease across the region. These important collections\u00a0were added to the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) UK Memory of the World Register in May 2011.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lhsa.lib.ed.ac.uk\/source\/HIVAIDS_index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Edinburgh and Lothian HIV\/AIDS Collections<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I did just quick surface level delve to see what we might hold on this theme.
