Together with Rowan Rush-Morgan, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a second-year PhD student in Geography, we had the opportunity of working on an exciting web-mapping internship for the Regional Ethnology of Scotland Project (RESP) within the Centre for Research Collections (CRC).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-41 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/resp\/files\/2022\/05\/Map2-300x239.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A web-map was envisaged as an interactive way for users to browse the RESP catalogue in a visual way, finding recordings based on the place<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> names mentioned within them. There are some examples of using web-mapping technology to visualise archival information, such as this map (https:\/\/witches.is.ed.ac.uk\/ ) of witch trials in Scotland. However, we could not find any examples that used data directly from within an archival catalogue, so this would be a venture into the unknown both for ourselves and the RESP team.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Geocoding and updating the Archive\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:40}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\"><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW223538460 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">Throughout the internship<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">Rowan <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">focused on<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> data preparation. Place names were collated <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">from recording<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> transcripts, these were then converted into co-ordinates using the QGIS Geocode plugin. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">This<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> was no easy task:<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">in fact<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">multiple places with the same name exist. You can find Aberdeen in Hong Kong, the USA, and Jamaica! <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">Furthermore,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">interviewees often refer to places by their locally known rather than \u2018official\u2019 names<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">while <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">other<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> place<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> names<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> have changed <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">over <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">the years. After <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">finding<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> the best possible co-ordinate matches, Rowan<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">added <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">this information<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SpellingErrorHighlight SCXW223538460 BCX9\">ArchivesSpace<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">RESP\u2019s digital archive, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">linking each <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\">place name to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> the interview<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW223538460 BCX9\"> where it was mentioned.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW223538460 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pins on the map<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:40}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">While Rowan prepared the data, I focused on setting up the web map. With the help of Scott Renton, IT project manager, and Patryk Smacki, software developer at the University of Edinburgh, we developed an interactive web map for the RESP website using open-so<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">urce mapping library OpenLayers. This entailed a lot of coding in JavaScript and Python. Users can explore the map and zoom, pan and click on a pin to be directed to all the RESP interviews relating to that specific place. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We hope the map gives users a much more accessible way to browse the RESP catalogue and offers an example to other archives of the ways in which web-mapping technologies can be utilised to visualise archival collections.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We have really enjoyed our time with the RESP team.
