Resource Lists: Rollover 14th June

On 14th June we will rollover Resource Lists from 2017/18 to 2018/19. Please do not edit your 2017/18 list after 13th June as any changes made will not be rolled over. Vet lists will be rolled over at a later date TBC.

What will happen when lists are rolled over?

*If* the course is running in 2018/19, rollover will duplicate your current 2017/18 Resource List and create a new version of the list for 2018/19.

On 14th June there will be two versions of each list (2017/18 and 2018/19).

  • The 2017/18 version will remain ‘Active’ until the end of resits.
  • On 19th August, 2017/18 courses will become ‘Inactive’ but lists will remain published and will still be accessible to students.

On 14th June, the current 2017/18 version will become READ ONLY, please make any changes for next academic year to the new 2018/19 version of your list.

Student access

Students will be able to access previous years’ lists either via the corresponding year’s course in Learn or via http://resourcelists.ed.ac.uk  (from August, they must select ‘ALL’ or ‘Inactive’ to find non-current years’ lists).

Please don’t unpublish 2017/18 lists.

Can’t see the new 2018/19 list after rollover?

  • If you can’t see a new version of your list after rollover, let us know. Course organiser information comes from central systems – we realise that the people teaching may not always be identified here. Let us know and we can provide access.
  • If the course availability has changed (eg the course will be taught in Sem 1 instead of Sem 2) let us know.
  • If a course hasn’t been confirmed for 2018/19 it may not rollover on 14th June – if it’s confirmed at a later date, let us know and we’ll copy your 2017/18 list.

If you are no longer teaching on a course, if there have been any significant changes to a course or list or if you have any questions, please email Library.Learning@ed.ac.uk

Resource Lists: New in May

Updated! Add items to your resource list

The way to add new items to your list looks a bit different. This is how it works:

  1. Click on the blue + button in the panel at the top of your list.
  2. A panel will now open on the right:

Now you’ve got three ways to add items to your list: Search, Create, and My Collection.

Search

This is where you search DiscoverEd; once you’ve found the item, you can simply drag and drop it into your list:

Or, you can:

  • Click on the item
  • Choose the section from the drop-down menu
  • Click on add

Create

If you need to create your own citation – if it’s something not held by the Library or available online – then you can use this option.

Type in the details, pick a section from the drop-down menu, then click on add.

My Collection

My Collection is where you can store and organise your personal collection of resources (ready to add to your lists).

This works in pretty much the same way as the search option:

You can drag and drop an item directly into your list.

Alternatively, you can click on an item, choose which section you’d like to add it to, then click add.

Resource Lists: New in January and February 2018

It’s a bumper edition this time, with resource lists updates from January and February. As ever, if you have any questions about the features please get in touch with the Library Learning Services team at library.learning@ed.ac.uk

Restore recently deleted lists

New! You can now recover your deleted lists! If you’ve accidentally deleted a list, or want to recover something you thought you’d never need again, you can do this from your ‘My Lists’ page in Leganto.

Click on the reading list options button (the three dots near the top of the screen) and select Recently Deleted.

All of your recently deleted lists will now be visible on this page. To restore a list, select reading list options, then click on Restore. It will then be visible again to your ‘My Lists’ page (in draft).

Add Notes to lists

New! There’s now an option to add notes between citations in your resource list. You can still add a public note to any individual item on the list, but this also gives you the option to add a standalone note anywhere in the list:

To add a note, click on the section options button (the three dots on the right) and select Add a note.

Fill in the details, then click Add

NB By default, your note will be added to the bottom of the section, but you can drag and drop the note to any position in the resource list (in the same way you can for citations).

Search filters added

New! Options to filter your search results by type eg book, article, audiovisual etc. are now included in the Leganto search box, which means you can narrow your search results when adding items to your list.

Add the same item to multiple lists

New! Finally, a small (but handy) update: you can now add an item to multiple resource lists using the Cite it! button. Click Add to add the citation to a selected resource list. This keeps the Cite it! window open, so you can continue adding the item to multiple resource lists. (If you only want to add the item to one resource list, click Add & Close, which adds the item to the list, then closes the Cite it! window.)

Beyond your Resource List: more ways to find course resources

For some of your classes, your resource list will be a useful starting point, but you’ll want to explore other resources in the Library (and beyond). Here are some of the ways you can find what else is out there:

DiscoverEd

DiscoverEd is the Library’s discovery service; use it to search the Library’s collections, including books, e-books, journal titles, journal articles, and databases.

Student Request a Book (RaB)

Student Request a Book form

If you can’t find a book you need for your studies, you can use the Request a Book form and the Library will try to buy it. However, it can take a few weeks for a book to arrive; if you need something quickly, you might want to submit an interlibrary loan request instead.

Interlibrary Loans (ILL)

About Interlibrary Loans (ILL)

You can use the ILL service to borrow material not held by Edinburgh University Library. Most things can be requested: books, articles, reports, conference proceedings, patents, standards as well as other materials. All staff and students have a quota of free requests per academic year (5 for undergraduates, 30 for postgraduates and staff) and straightforward requests from widely-available books or major journals can arrive within a few days, but more obscure items can take longer, so don’t leave your request to the last minute!

But how do I find what isn’t in the Library…?

Many ‘extra’ resources will come from the bibliographies of the books and journal articles on your resource list; you’ll come across an interesting title and want to investigate further. However, you can also use other discovery services such as WorldCat, which searches the collections of over 10,000 libraries around the world.

You can also contact your Academic Support Librarian, who will be able to help you with things like literature searching and explain more about all the different services the Library offers.

Resource Lists: troubleshooting and further guidance

  • I can’t access the things on my list!

What to do: If you’re having problems accessing the resources on a list, or can’t see links where there ought to be links, then you may not be logged in to Resource Lists.

If you see ‘Guest’ in the top right of the screen you’re not logged in!

To log in, just click on ‘Guest’ and then you’ll be prompted to sign in using your EASE details. You should now be able to see the links and access all the resources on your list.

  • I’m getting an ‘illegal institution’ error message!

What to do: This issue does crop up occasionally, but should be resolved if you try the following:

  1. If you’re going through LEARN, don’t use Internet Explorer! Use Chrome or Firefox;
  2. If you’re going through LEARN and using Safari, you may need to change your browser settings to ‘accept cookies’;
  3. If you’re still having problems, you can log in through the homepage (http://resourcelists.ed.ac.uk). You need to make sure and sign in to have full text access to resources (go to ‘Guest’ top right of screen to log in).
  4. If you’re still unable to access Resource Lists, we can check your  Library account is set up correctly – if this is the case, drop us a line (library.learning@ed.ac.uk) with your details and we’ll investigate.
  • I need some Resource Lists guidance!

What to do:

  1. Have a look at the user guides and the Resource Lists website: http://www.ed.ac.uk/information-services/research-teaching-staff/resource-lists
  2. Get in touch: you can email us at library.learning@ed.ac.uk or tweet us @ResourceListsEd

What do you think of your resource lists?

Is there anything you would like to share with us, or ask us? There are many ways to tell us about resource lists:

  • You can leave your feedback in Leganto, it only takes 5 minutes. Go to your resource list, click on “Useful links” at the bottom of the left hand side panel, and choose “Feedback survey”.
  • You can email library.learning@ed.ac.uk with all your comments and suggestions.
  • Follow us on Twitter @ResourceListsEd
  • Come and visit us in the Main Library Foyer this week and fill in our little competition entry form, to leave your comments and also to get a chance to win a £100 book voucher. See you there!

Do more with your resource list: follow, tag, discuss, and share

A resource list is more than just an easy way to get to your course reading (very useful though that is!); you can follow lists, add and tag items in your personal collection, and discuss the resources on a list. Also, you can suggest new items to add to your resource lists.

Resource Lists: New in December

We’ll be posting about new updates every month, but here are some of the new features in Leganto released in December:

1. New! Student view: you see what your list looks like from a student’s point of view. Click on the ‘Reading list options’ button, then select ‘View list as a student’:

2. New! The ‘Send List’ button is at the top of the list. It’s now a bit easier to send your list to the Library for review:

Also, when you hover over the ‘Send List’ button, you can see when it was last sent over to the Library:

If you want to know what the Library does when you send in your list, see https://www.ed.ac.uk/information-services/research-teaching-staff/resource-lists/using-resource-lists/review

3. New! You can export a .ris file of your items in ‘My Collection’ for use in bibliographic management software such as EndNote or RefWorks:

4. New! Deleted lists can be recovered. Don’t worry if you’ve accidentally deleted your list! Get in touch with Library Learning Services and we can recover it for you.

And a sneaky peak for next month… You’ll be able to associate a Creative Commons licence with a list, which shows anyone viewing your list how it can be used or shared. This is a new feature we requested and it’s a simple way to manage the copyright terms that apply to your list.

Reminder for Semester 2! Please check to see if your second semester lists are published and linked to your course page on LEARN/Moodle. There’s some guidance on the Resource Lists website: https://www.ed.ac.uk/information-services/research-teaching-staff/resource-lists/user-guides

If you’re not sure whether you’ve got a list, you can search the Resource Lists homepage: http://resourcelists.ed.ac.uk

If you have any queries, please get in touch with the Library Learning Services team at library.learning@ed.ac.uk

There’s still time to send us your Semester 2 Resource Lists!

The Library Learning Services team has a bit more time to work on lists before the end of the year (Leganto has really helped us speed through our work!)… So, if you missed the deadline, but would like a resource list for Semester 2, please get in touch by Friday 1st December.

If you would like the Library to build your Semester 2 Resource List, please send your annotated list with a completed coversheet to library.learning@ed.ac.uk. We’ll start working on it and try to get books purchased and chapters scanned before the start of term.

You can download the coversheet here: http://www.docs.is.ed.ac.uk/docs/library/ResourceLists/Resource_List_Coversheet_2017.docx

Alternatively, you can create your list yourself and use ‘Send to library’ to request a review.

Remember to prioritise items on your list using the ‘Essential’, ‘Recommended’ and ‘Further reading’ tags, and to request e-reserve scans, use the ‘Digitisation’ tag and ‘Library discussion’ to provide page numbers or chapter details of pages you’d like scanned.
