New College Library Gaelic Collections 250.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Did you know that over 400 items which together\u00a0form the Gaelic Collections at New College Library have\u00a0recently been <a title=\"Library Catalogue, University of Edinburgh\" href=\"http:\/\/catalogue.lib.ed.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #1982d1\">catalogued online<\/span><\/a>?\u00a0 Come and join me at the Pop-up Library (on the first floor of the Main Library) on <strong>Wednesday\u00a022 October,\u00a010-12 pm<\/strong>, to find out more.<\/p>\n<p>The Gaelic Collection\u00a0contains several editions of\u00a0 \u201cDain spioradail \u201d by the celebrated hymn writer Peter Grant, and this edition at Gaelic Coll. 250\u00a0 is the fifth edition, considerably enlarged and improved from earlier editions. It was published in Elgin, in\u00a0the highlands of Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>The title page information refers to Grant\u2019s Gaelic name P\u00e0draig Grannd nan \u00d2ran, which means \u2018Peter Grant of the songs\u2019. Grant was a Baptist minister, born on 30 January 1783 at Ballintua, Strathspey, Scotland. He was a skilled fiddle player, who was able to set his poems on evangelical themes to well known tunes which were popular into the twentieth century.\u00a0 This work is typical of the works in the Gaelic Collection,\u00a0which contains many volumes of\u00a0religious poetry.\u00a0The\u00a0Gaelic\u00a0Collection was put together from various sources,\u00a0including a substantial donation from the bequest of the Rev.
