The images collated here come from theses discussing\u00a0subjects\u00a0raging from\u00a0martyred saints\u00a0to housing development and time periods\u00a0from the Iron Age\u00a0to 1967.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-72 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/phddigitisation\/files\/2016\/07\/byzantine1-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"byzantine1\" width=\"295\" height=\"211\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Discovery of the relics of St. Luke the evangelist in the church of the Holy Apostles (Vat. Grec. 1613, p.121; Powell: 1963)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\">One such fascinating subject is the depiction of the treatment and burial of martyred saints in the Byzantine era. These images are drawn from the thesis by Ann Powell (1963) entitled \u201cByzantine landscape painting, with special reference to the Illustrations of the Monologian of Basil II, Vat. Grec. 1613\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/phddigitisation\/files\/2016\/07\/byzantine-2-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"byzantine 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/phddigitisation\/files\/2016\/07\/byzantine-2-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/phddigitisation\/files\/2016\/07\/byzantine-2-441x300.jpg 441w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/phddigitisation\/files\/2016\/07\/byzantine-2.jpg 686w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Funeral of St Matthew (Symeon), (Vat Grec. 1613 p186; Powell: 1963)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Palatino Linotype',serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The history and culture of Scotland also features prominently.\u00a0Another gem discusses the period of the\u00a014<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> to 17<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> centuries including images of the cemeteries and tombs found in Ayrshire (Largs, Skelmorlie Aisle) and Perthshire (Grantully). As part of this work (MR Apted\u2019s, 1964, \u201cpainting in Scotland from the 14<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> to the 17<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: medium\"> centuries with particular reference to painted domestic decoration 1550-1650) the interior\u00a0design of this period is recorded with painstaking detail.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone
