{"id":335,"date":"2015-06-26T15:36:48","date_gmt":"2015-06-26T15:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/openscholarship\/?p=335"},"modified":"2015-06-26T15:36:48","modified_gmt":"2015-06-26T15:36:48","slug":"oai9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/openscholarship\/2015\/06\/26\/oai9\/","title":{"rendered":"OAI9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/indico.cern.ch\/event\/332370\/\">CERN Workshop on Innovations in Scholarly Communication (OAI9)<\/a> in Geneva, a workshop looking at developments in scholarly communication, it was a diverse programme and attracted people from all sectors of scholarly communication,\u00a0\u00a0here are some of my highlights from each day;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day One &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Beginning the first day were a choice of tutorials, \u00a0I elected \u00a0<em>the institution as publisher: getting started<\/em> presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/ucl-press\">UCL<\/a> who are the first fully Open Access University Press in the UK. This offers a real alternative to commercial publishers, at the moment the majority of UCL Press authors are internal, external authors are liable to pay an APC.<\/p>\n<p>The Keynote by<em> Michael Nielsen, Beyond Open Access, <\/em>looked at<em>\u00a0<\/em>how open access policies should be crafted so they don\u2019t inhibit innovation by constraining experimentation, new media forms and different types of publication. Following this was the session\u00a0<em>Looking at Barriers and Impact,\u00a0<\/em>Erin McKiernan, who is an early career researcher talked about her own experience and barriers she has faced in accessing research, she has made a pledge to be open, her opinion was early career researchers are in a position to be game changers in terms of making their research open. Finally Joseph McArthur, talked about the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessbutton.org\/\">Open Access button<\/a> <\/em>\u00a0helping readers find open access versions of research outputs, this is a tool created by young people who frequently faced barriers to accessing research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day Two &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>The second day of the workshop was held at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.campusbiotech.ch\/en\/\">Campus Biotech<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/01337LOW_HQ_MERCK_SERONO.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6519\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/01337LOW_HQ_MERCK_SERONO-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"01337LOW_HQ_MERCK_SERONO\" width=\"423\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first session looked at Open Science Workflows, CHORUS and SHARE, Jeroen Bosman and Bianca Kramer from Utrecht gave a really interesting presentation on the changing workflow of research \u2013 they had three goals for science and scholarship &#8211; Open, Efficient, Good. We should be supporting open science instead of just open access leading to diminishing traditional journals.\u00a0This was highlighted using a diagram they created &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/figshare.com\/articles\/101_Innovations_in_Scholarly_Communication_the_Changing_Research_Workflow\/1286826\">101 innovations in scholarly communication<\/a>, highlighting the patterns and processes of innovation in this field. \u00a0This is an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/101innovations.wordpress.com\/\">survey<\/a>\u00a0of scholarly communication tool usage \u2013 part of an ongoing effort to chart the changing landscape of scholarly communication.<\/p>\n<p>Following this\u00a0session\u00a0was<em> Quality Assurance,<\/em>\u00a0focusing on researchers and reforming the peer review process.\u00a0<em>Janne-Tuomas Seppanen <\/em>from<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peerageofscience.org\/\">Peerage of Science<\/a><\/em>\u00a0 stated that some peer reviews are excellent &#8211; some are not, Peerage of Science tries to address this by the scoring of peer reviews, the idea being that peer reviewers are themselves peer reviewed increasing and quantifying the quality of peer review. This service is free for academics and publishers pay.\u00a0<em>Andrew Preston from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publons.com\">Publons<\/a>\u00a0is looking at s<\/em>peeding up science by making peer review faster, more efficient, and more effective. The incentive for reviewers? Making peer review a measurable research output.<\/p>\n<p>I also attended the break out session on Copyright in Data and Text Mining which gave an\u00a0overview of the legal framework and an introduction to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehaguedeclaration.com\/\">The Hague Declaration<\/a> on Knowledge Discovery in the Digital Age launched in May this year which<em> &#8216;aims to foster agreement about how to best enable access to facts, data and ideas for knowledge discovery in the Digital Age. By removing barriers to accessing and analysing the wealth of data produced by society, we can find answers to great challenges such as climate change, depleting natural resources and globalisation.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The second day of the workshop ended in style at the <a href=\"http:\/\/institutions.ville-geneve.ch\/fr\/ariana\/\">Ariana<\/a>, \u00a0the Swiss museum of glass and ceramics\u00a0which opened its doors especially for attendees of OAI9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/20150618_193931-00000002.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6518\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/20150618_193931-00000002-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"20150618_193931 (00000002)\" width=\"237\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day Three &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>The focus of the first session was the Institution as Publisher, a new theme for OAI.\u00a0<em>Catriona M<\/em><em>accallum <\/em>from<em> PLOS <\/em>focused on the need for transparency, publishing is a cycle, not just about content provision.
