One of the collections that has been scanned\u00a0is a series of M.D theses written in Latin and published in the period from late 1700s to early 1800s. We now can claim to have the <a href=\"http:\/\/ethos.bl.uk\/OrderDetails.do?did=1&amp;uin=uk.bl.ethos.642992\" target=\"_blank\">oldest\u00a0thesis record<\/a> in the British Library&#8217;s e-thesis online service (EThOS) &#8211; a dissertation written\u00a0by\u00a0Thomas Charles Hope and published in 1787. The challenge is on for other institutions to beat this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/openscholarship\/files\/2015\/05\/Thomas_Charles_Hope.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-333\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/openscholarship\/files\/2015\/05\/Thomas_Charles_Hope.jpg\" alt=\"Thomas_Charles_Hope\" width=\"240\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Charles_Hope\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Charles Hope<\/a> was one of the University of Edinburgh&#8217;s more interesting alumnus who\u00a0discovered the chemical element Strontium, and also taught a young Charles Darwin\u00a0who\u00a0viewed his chemistry lectures as highlights in his <a title=\"Charles Darwin's education\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Darwin%27s_education\">otherwise largely dull education<\/a> at Edinburgh University (we&#8217;ve come along way since!).<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Charles Hope&#8217;s M.D thesis can be accessed online for free in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.era.lib.ed.ac.uk\/handle\/1842\/10017\" target=\"_blank\">Edinburgh Research Archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last few weeks and months we&#8217;ve been adding a lot of digitised material from our historical collections to the Edinburgh Research Archive.
