New College Library&#8217;s collections from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries provide a window into Jewish-Christian relations, particularly through travel writing, and through development of missions to Jews in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2893\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2893\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2893 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2017\/07\/Bible-Plants-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2017\/07\/Bible-Plants-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2017\/07\/Bible-Plants.jpg 581w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bible Plants, 1887<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New College Library\u2019s\u00a0collections are rich in the area of nineteenth century Christian encounters with Jews, usually in the form of mission to Jewish communities. The New College object collections include\u00a0objects collected from trips to the Holy Land, including the pressed flower album of\u00a0&#8216;Bible Plants&#8217; above,\u00a0phylacteries, a prayer shawl and a scale model of the Temple of Jerusalem. The book and archive collections include some fascinating materials\u00a0from the Church of Scotland\u2019s development of missions to Jews in the Middle East, including books, archives and objects relating to Rev. Andrew A. Bonar and <a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/2017\/02\/21\/writing-from-the-holy-land-writing-from-the-heart-robert-murray-mccheyne\/\">Rev. Robert Murray McCheyne<\/a>. Bonar and McCheyne\u00a0were appointed by the Church of Scotland in 1838 as part of a deputation to visit Jewish communities in Europe and the Middle East, with a view to future mission activity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1673\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1673\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1673 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2013\/10\/William-Foakes-Jackson-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2013\/10\/William-Foakes-Jackson-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2013\/10\/William-Foakes-Jackson-366x300.jpg 366w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2013\/10\/William-Foakes-Jackson.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1673\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Books from the William Foakes Jackson Collection<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/2017\/01\/23\/travel-writing-from-the-holy-land-the-william-fulton-jackson-collection\/\">William Fulton Jackson <\/a>Collection preserves the collection of\u00a0man who was an enthusiastic armchair traveller to the Holy Land, with a\u00a0popular, rather than academic interest in Israel and Palestine. His collection also includes many works on Jewish Studies, including encyclopedias and dictionaries, and demonstrates a keen interest in understanding Jews and Judaism.<\/p>\n<p>New College Library\u2019s Pamphlets Collection of over 35,000 items reflects a deliberate policy from the foundation of New College library in 1843 to collect pamphlets and ephemera on historical, religious and current issues. The collection includes these\u00a0three pamphlets are examples of the publisher Victor Gollancz\u2019s campaign to draw attention to the plight of the Jews in Europe and to demand that the British Government provide rescue and sanctuary for Jewish victims.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2889\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2889\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2889\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2017\/07\/Nazi-massacres-e1499581852623.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2017\/07\/Nazi-massacres-e1499581852623.jpg 240w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2017\/07\/Nazi-massacres-e1499581852623-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nazi massacres of the Jews &amp; others : some practical proposals for immediate rescue made by the Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord Rochester in speeches on March 23rd 1943 in the House of Lords. Z.h.30\/24<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the founders of the Council of Christians and Jews in 1942, Temple was at the forefront of the campaign to draw attention to the plight of the Jews in Europe and to demand that the British Government provide rescue and sanctuary for Jewish victims.
