This week New College welcomes the British Association for Jewish Studies Conference to Edinburgh. <\/a>Delegates are welcome to visit New College Library where they’ll find a display of Jewish Studies related\u00a0items from our Special Collections..<\/p>\n

Early Jewish sacred texts, biblical scholarship and devotional works in Hebrew can be discovered throughout New College Library\u2019s Special Collections.<\/p>\n

Printed in 1514,\u00a0this commentary on the first five books of the Hebrew bible by Moses Ben Nahman or Nahmanides (1195-1270), a Spanish rabbi\u00a0and leading Jewish scholar of the mediaeval period. This volume is part of the Dalman-Christie Collection,\u00a0which was originally transferred to New College Library in 1946 from the Church of Scotland Hospice in Jerusalem.\u00a0\u00a0The Dalman Christie Collection also includes the\u00a0Mikra’ot gedolot. <\/em>Bomberg Bible] (Venice, 1545) and <\/strong>this 1528 edition of Maimonides\u2019s commentary on the Mishnah.<\/p>\n

The study of Biblical languages to allow first hand engagement with scriptural texts has always been a feature of the New College curriculum. This is reflected in the Hebrew Collection, which contains dictionaries, language primers and textual commentaries from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. This edition of Reuchlin’s Hebrew Grammar, a Reformation scholar’s attempt to provide a tool to unlock the grammatical and exegetical tradition\u00a0of the Hebrew Bible, was published in 1537.<\/p>\n

New College Library’s collection also contain evidence of the Christian world’s attempt to understand Jewish communities, and of Jewish communities’ place within that world.<\/p>\n

This image of phylacteries\u00a0is taken from\u00a0 a six volume seventeenth century set of the Mishnah, which\u00a0has text in\u00a0Hebrew and Latin.\u00a0It also contains commentaries of\u00a0Maimonides and Bertinoro in Latin. New College Library holds copies in both the Dalman-Christie and the Longforgan Collections.<\/p>\n

Mah\u0323zor h\u0323elek\u0323 rishon [1699] New College Library Dal-Chr 14<\/p><\/div>Also from the Dalman-Christie Collection, this volume of\u00a0prayers and devotions for Ashkenazi Jewish festivals\u00a0<\/em>was published c. 1699\u00a0 in Sulzbach\u00a0in the Rhineland, where medieval Jewish communities had settled. The book still has some of its original brass studs and brass clasps intact.<\/p>\n
