{"id":2756,"date":"2017-03-01T14:38:12","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T14:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/?p=2756"},"modified":"2017-03-01T14:38:12","modified_gmt":"2017-03-01T14:38:12","slug":"historic-new-college-library-partnership-begins-a-new-chapter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/2017\/03\/01\/historic-new-college-library-partnership-begins-a-new-chapter\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic New College Library partnership begins a new chapter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Founded in 1843 as the Library of the Free Church College, and now serving the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, New College Library is one of the largest theology libraries in the UK with approximately a quarter of a million items.<\/p>\n<p>There have been a number of legacy arrangements\u00a0allowing borrowing access for ministers of the Church of Scotland and Free Church of Scotland. This reflects the partnership between the University of Edinburgh and the Church of Scotland,\u00a0which has resulted in\u00a0the Church\u2019s historic collections\u00a0being\u00a0maintained at New College Library and supported by the University of Edinburgh. (Please note that access to the Library is via stairs \u2013 if you have limited mobility please contact the Library for advice before you come). Contact details, further information on joining the library and opening hours\u00a0 can be\u00a0found at \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/is\/new-college-library\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/is\/new-college-library<\/span><\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the Church\u2019s historic collections at New College Library?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New College Library&#8217;s substantial rare book collections reflect its heritage as a centre of learning for Presbyterian ministry. Early Bibles in Latin, Greek and Hebrew as well as English form a rich seam throughout the collections, which also includes more modern Bibles in languages from throughout the globe. Pamphlets are a particular strength of the collection, including many unique early Scottish imprints. The collections were formed\u00a0by the\u00a0Free Church of Scotland from New College&#8217;s foundation in 1843, and\u00a0augmented by the theological collections of the Church of Scotland General Assembly Library and the Edinburgh Theological Library\u00a0as a result of church union in 1929.\u00a0The Church of Scotland historical collection, including the Dumfries Presbytery Library, transferred from Tolbooth Church Library to New College Library in 1958, and the Church of Scotland Lending Library\u00a0came to New College Library in 1971.<br \/>\nA large part of our collections are catalogued online on the University of Edinburgh\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/discovered.ed.ac.uk\/\">DiscoverEd<\/a> with further material listed on the older catalogues kept in New College Library. New College Library B.r.438\/1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New College Library also holds significant archive collections relating to the Church of Scotland, Free Church of Scotland and the religious life of Scotland. These include the papers of\u00a0one of the leaders of the\u00a01843 Disruption, Thomas Chalmers, and New College Principals Robert Rainy and Alexander Whyte. Twentieth century collections include the papers of J.S. Oldham, Tom Allan and John McIntyre. All of our collections are catalogued on archival handlists kept in New College Library, and significant work has now been done to make a proportion of these handlists available online and searchable via the University of Edinburgh&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/archives.collections.ed.ac.uk\">Archives Online<\/a> site. This means, for instance,\u00a0that details of the MS BOX papers, which seems to have come almost entirely from the Library of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, is now searchable online. New College Library\u00a0maintains a New College Archive,\u00a0although it is not indexed by name of student, and you may need to visit New College Library in order to research it.
