{"id":2517,"date":"2016-06-20T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2016-06-20T10:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/?p=2517"},"modified":"2016-06-09T12:00:06","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T12:00:06","slug":"mission-to-the-middle-east-discovering-collections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/2016\/06\/20\/mission-to-the-middle-east-discovering-collections\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission to the Middle East : discovering collections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week New College Library welcomes delegates of the 2016 conference of the <a href=\"http:\/\/divinity-adhoc.library.yale.edu\/Yale-Edinburgh\/\">Yale-Edinburgh Group\u00a0on the History of the Missionary Movement and World Christianity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been discovering that New College Library&#8217;s unique collections include some fascinating materials\u00a0from the Church of Scotland&#8217;s development of missions to Jews in the Middle East, in the nineteenth century. In particular we hold books, archives and objects relating to Rev. Andrew A. Bonar and Rev. Robert Murray McCheyne, and a selection of items from\u00a0these collections are now on display in the New College Library entrance.\u00a0Bonar and McCheyne\u00a0were appointed by the Church of Scotland in 1838 as part of a deputation to visit Jewish communities in Europe and the Middle East, with a view to future mission activity.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2518\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2518\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2518 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2016\/06\/LC57BonarsBible-1024x579.jpg\" alt=\"Remains of Andrew Bonar\u2019s Bible. New College Library, Object 57<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is the remains of Andrew Bonar\u2019s Bible, which was dropped into Jacob\u2019s Well at Sychar in Samaria by its owner in 1839, and recovered years later.
