MH 193<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sixteenth century devotional works such as the printed Book of Hours \u2018The Salisbury Rite\u2019 are valuable examples of aids for private worship.<!--more--> This printed Catholic book of hours retains its original sixteenth century decorated binding with the gilt tooled inscription of the first owner. The exceptional provenance includes ownership by Edinburgh University Prof. Laurence Charteris (1625-1700) and first New College Librarian Prof. David Welsh (1793-1845).<\/p>\n<p>Worship within the church community is celebrated in the Hymnology Collection.\u00a0 This collection\u00a0includes psalms, sacred songs and poetry as well as hymns, including\u00a0items intended for children, both for Sunday School and home use. The whole book of Psalms: with the usual hymns and spiritual songs: Together with all the ancient and proper tunes sung in churches, with some of later use. London: J. Heptinstall, 1707. Hymn 289<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>The whole book of Psalms<\/em> by John Playford (1623-1686) was intended to provide harmonised versions of the Psalms for use in church worship with a choir. It was used throughout the eighteenth century in England, Scotland and North America.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2485\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2485\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2485\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2016\/05\/0078066d-1.jpg\" alt=\"The Psalms of David in metre, according to the version approved by the Church of Scotland, and appointed to be used in worship. Edinburgh: Blair and Bruce, 1823. Hymn 736.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This edition of the Psalms of David has a distinctive provenance identifying it as the personal copy of the Rev. Alexander Duff (1806-1878). He was the first missionary of the Church of Scotland to India and this book was shipwrecked along with him near the Cape of Good Hope.<\/p>\n<p>Ephemeral materials such as orders of Church services can also be found in the Library\u2019s Pamphlet collection, preserving a record of how the Church engaged and changed with contemporary events through its acts of worship.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2487\" style=\"width: 542px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2487\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2487\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2016\/05\/0078064d.jpg\" alt=\"Church of Scotland Committee on Aids to Devotion.
