Over 170 years later New College, and New College Library still have an active relationship with the Free Church of Scotland,\u00a0whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ets.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edinburgh Theological Seminary<\/a> students come to use New College Library.\u00a0As you would expect from\u00a0our shared history, we have rich historical collections for the Free Church, but we also continue to collect some current material from them.<\/p>\n<p>To research\u00a0current issues in the Free Church, the <em><span class=\"subfieldData\">Reports to the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland<\/span><\/em> are now held in Stack II at <strong>Per F<\/strong>, side by side with the recent Principal Acts.\u00a0The <em>Principal Acts of the General Assembly of the Free Church of<\/em> <em>Scotland 1900-2014<\/em> are available free to download at <a href=\"http:\/\/freechurch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/freechurch.org\/<\/a>. Recent Free Church Assembly Reports are also available to download from <a href=\"http:\/\/freechurch.org\/resources\/assembly-reports\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/freechurch.org\/resources\/assembly-reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subfieldData\">New College Library Free Church holdings are probably most comprehensive for the earlier period of Free Church history.\u00a0The<em> Acts of the General Assembly of the Free Church of<\/em> <em>Scotland 1843-1900 <\/em>are available in Stack I at <em>sLY 50 A<\/em>, alongside the <em>Assembly proceedings and debates<\/em> at <em>sLY 50 B<\/em>. This material is available on open access &#8211; please note that the online library catalogue also lists additional copies with individual entries by date which are kept in Special Collections. Researchers looking for browsing access may prefer the General Collections\u00a0copies available\u00a0in Stack I.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"bibTitle\">\n<p>New College Library also holds the historic periodicals of the Free Church, including <em>The monthly record of the Free Church of Scotland<\/em> at Per M and\u00a0the <em>Free Church Magazine at Per F <\/em>in Stack II. BX9084 Fre.<\/span><\/u><\/a><\/span><em><span class=\"subfieldData\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span class=\"subfieldData\">The matriculation records of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"subfieldData\">New College students 1843-1943 are also searchable online\u00a0at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.lib.ed.ac.uk\/alumni\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.archives.lib.ed.ac.uk\/alumni\/<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"subfieldData\">This data is a combination of two different lists drawn up by J. Robb and Hugh Watt and held at New College Library. Together they provide the master list of students who matriculated at New College Edinburgh for the first 100 years of its existence. These have been augmented with information drawn from <em>Annals of the Free Church of Scotland<\/em>, <em>Annals of the United Free Church of Scotland 1900-1929<\/em> and the <em>Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"subfieldData\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span class=\"subfieldData\">Useful information about ministers\u00a0may also be gleaned from the\u00a0<em>Dictionary of National Biography<\/em> (available in print and online) and from searching the online archives of\u00a0historic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/library-databases\/databases-subject-a-z\/database-newspapers\" target=\"_blank\">newspapers<\/a>\u00a0such as the <em>Times<\/em> and the <em>Scotsman<\/em> (tip : try limiting your search to obituaries).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bibTags\">\u00a0<em>Christine Love-Rodgers &#8211; Academic Support Librarian, Divinity<\/em><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New College&#8217;s origins lie in the Disruption of 1843, when over a third of the ministers in the Church of Scotland left to form the new Free Church of Scotland.
