Now we’re in the in the final stages of the Centre for the Studies of World Christianity Library (CSWC)\u00a0Project,\u00a0we’re receiving\u00a0daily deliveries of books to New College Library from the Library Annexe.Nearly 7,500 items have already\u00a0been\u00a0reclassified with Library of Congress classmarks, with\u00a0roughly 2,500\u00a0of these\u00a0set be housed at classmark\u00a0BV, Practical Theology & Missions.\u00a0CSWC\u00a0books\u00a0can be identified\u00a0on the library catalogue as “Andrew Walls Library Collection. From the Library of the Centre for the Study of World Christianity, University of Edinburgh. Presented by Professor Andrew Walls, OBE.” All of these items are unique\u00a0within the University of Edinburgh Library, and I’ve found a number I’ve looked at\u00a0to be\u00a0unique in the UK.<\/p>\n

I spent time\u00a0this week\u00a0looking through\u00a0a\u00a0selection of\u00a0CSWC books that were published before 1900, and selected over 50 to be held in\u00a0the Special Collections at New College Library. It’s fascinating to see how many titles are about women missionaries, or written by women, reflecting their engagement in the mission activity of this time. Many of these items have attractive pictorial Victorian publishers bindings, such as these\u00a0books – A White Woman in Central Africa<\/em>, Daughters of Syria<\/em> and In Southern India<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Some items in the collection\u00a0include signatures, such as the\u00a0two Chinese-English dictionaries signed\u00a0“Annie Buchan”, evidence that they were used by this missionary to China\u00a0whose papers are in the care of the CSWC Archive<\/a>. A number of volumes\u00a0are signed by Robert Laws,\u00a0 Free Church of Scotland missionary to\u00a0Livingstonia, Nyasaland (now Malawi), whose diaries are held in New College Library’s Special Collections at MSS LAW<\/a>.<\/p>\n
