{"id":1918,"date":"2014-06-17T15:13:26","date_gmt":"2014-06-17T15:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/?p=1918"},"modified":"2014-06-17T15:13:26","modified_gmt":"2014-06-17T15:13:26","slug":"manuscripts-on-display-for-elizabeth-melville-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/2014\/06\/17\/manuscripts-on-display-for-elizabeth-melville-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Manuscripts on display for Elizabeth Melville Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>From Monday 16th June to Friday 27th June manuscript\u00a0work by Elizabeth Melville, Lady Culross\u00a0is on display in New College Library.\u00a0Two rare examples of early modern women\u2019s writing\u00a0are displayed together for the first time as part of the events around <a title=\"Elizabeth Melville Day\" href=\"http:\/\/www.historyfest.co.uk\/pages\/elizabeth-melville-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Melville Day<\/a> on Saturday 21st June.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Melville, Lady Culross, was the first Scotswoman to see her work in print with the publication of her mini-epic &#8216;Ane Godlie Dreame&#8217; in 1603.<\/p>\n<p>She was the daughter of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddnb.com.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk\/view\/article\/18548\/?back=,6009\">Sir James Melville<\/a> of Halhill (1535\/6\u20131617), the diplomat and autobiographer.\u00a0 Elizabeth was at the centre of a network supporting the exiled and imprisoned Presbyterian ministers, and her strong Calvinist faith is expressed in her writings.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1919\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/Melviller2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1919\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1919\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/Melviller2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh University Library, Special Collections La.III.347\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/Melviller2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/Melviller2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/Melviller2-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/Melviller2.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edinburgh University Library, Special Collections La.III.347<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On display is a volume of original letters,\u00a0 received by the University of Edinburgh\u00a0in 1878 as part of the David Laing collection.\u00a0 It contains two holograph letters by Elizabeth to her son James (dated 1625 and 1629), nine to Reverend John Livingstone (eight holographs and one 19<sup>th<\/sup> century transcription, dated 1629-32), and one holograph to the Countess of Wigtoun (1630), and is a unique source of information about the poet.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1920\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/0055459c-2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1920\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1920\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/0055459c-2-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mss Bru 2, New College Library Special Collections\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/0055459c-2-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2014\/06\/0055459c-2.jpg 558w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mss Bru 2, New College Library Special Collections<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This volume\u00a0is displayed together with the Bruce Manuscripts, from New College Library Special Collections. The Bruce Manuscripts contains twenty nine sermons on Hebrews XI, preached in 1590-91 by Robert Bruce,\u00a0 Edinburgh minister.
