The School of Divinity&#8217;s exams are over, and the bustle of last week&#8217;s General Assembly has\u00a0faded. Inside the \u00a0library, only a few dedicated researchers are at work &#8211; and the library staff, of course. Hymnology Collection, E15\/g 6.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<em>The child&#8217;s book of song and praise [1870] <\/em>is an item from the Hymnology Collections. The core of these collections was the gift in the 1880s\u00a0of two thousand hymnbooks from James Thin, the founder of the famous Edinburgh bookshop. This collection has been added to by gift, purchase and the re-organisation of other library books of a similar nature to form the collection of over 5000 items\u00a0 we have today.<\/p>\n<p>Primarily 18<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century printed volumes (some with very nice pictorial publishers bindings), \u00a0there are also some\u00a0older\u00a0books, \u00a0a few scores and some\u00a0LPs and cassettes. The collection\u00a0covers sacred songs and poetry as well as hymns, including\u00a0\u00a0many items intended for children, both for Sunday School and home use. This verse from <em>The child&#8217;s book of song and praise <\/em>is just one example:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Peace be around thee, wherever thou rov&#8217;st&#8217; \/\u00a0May life be for thee one summer&#8217;s day &#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A project to catalogue the Hymnology Collections online\u00a0has just begun &#8211; just one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/services\/library-museum-gallery\/finding-resources\/subject-guides\/divinity\/news\">Funk Cataloguing Projects<\/a> which are opening up the Special Collections here at New College Library.<!-- =======================      END OF CONTENT      ==================== --><!-- end layout --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summer has arrived!\u00a0\u00a0The weather forecast says 12 degrees today &#8211; \u00a0but it feels much warmer.
