{"id":1025,"date":"2013-01-10T11:59:47","date_gmt":"2013-01-10T10:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newcollegelibrarian.wordpress.com\/?p=1025"},"modified":"2020-07-20T11:27:29","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T11:27:29","slug":"works-of-king-james-i-vi-now-on-display-at-new-college-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/2013\/01\/10\/works-of-king-james-i-vi-now-on-display-at-new-college-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Works of King James I &amp; VI now on display at New College Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1030\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1030\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1030 \" title=\"Works of King James I &amp; VI\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2013\/01\/dscf5062.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Works of King James I &amp; VI\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2013\/01\/dscf5062.jpg 2592w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2013\/01\/dscf5062-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/newcollegelibrarian\/files\/2013\/01\/dscf5062-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serenissimi et potentissimi Principis Iacobi, Dei gratia, Magnae Britanniae, Franciae, et Hiberniae Regis, fidei defensoris, opera &#8230;<br \/>New College Library DPL.25<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New on display in the entrance to New College Library is the <em>Works <\/em>of King James I of England and VI of Scotland edited by\u00a0 James Montagu, Bishop of Winchester, and Dean of the Royal Chapel.<\/p>\n<p>With an engraved portrait\u00a0 of Prince Charles (later King Charles I), and later the Royal Coat of Arms this contains James&#8217;\u00a0 paraphrase of the apocalyptic books of the Bible, as well as works on royalty and church and state.<\/p>\n<p>The volume has a vellum binding covered in a stamped gilded decoration of scattered flowers around a central image of a wild boar.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the Dumfries Presbytery Library, the volume is inscribed Ex Libris Johannes Hutton.\u00a0 Dr John Hutton, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, became the first Treasurer of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (1681\u201382), and Court Physician to King William III and Queen Mary (1688\u20131702).<br \/>\nLater he was also MP for Dumfries Burghs (1710\u201312) and when he died in London, in November 1712, he gave as a bequest his library of 1,500 volumes to the Presbytery of Dumfries.
