This collection offers unprecedented digital access to the peerless archive of the historic John Murray publishing company.<\/p>\n

The archive of the John Murray publishing company contains primary source material spanning the entirety of the long nineteenth century and document the golden era of the House of Murray from its inception in 1768. Records digitised in this resource predominantly focus on the tenure of John Murray II and his son, John Murray III, as they rose to prominence in the publishing trade, launching long-running series including the political periodical Quarterly Review<\/em>, and publishing genre-defining titles such as Darwin\u2019s On the Origin of Species<\/em>, Austen\u2019s Emma<\/em> and Livingstone\u2019s Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The John Murray Archive houses the most complete archival collection of the famed poet, Lord Byron; his manuscripts and personal papers are a particular highlight of\u00a0Nineteenth Century Literary Society<\/strong>, charting both literary triumph and personal scandal.<\/p>\n

You can also trace the development of key Murray titles from initial discussions through to final drafts, browsing early advertisements and tracking sales successes \u2013 and failures \u2013 across financial papers and ledgers.<\/p>\n

The John Murray Archive is housed at the National Library of Scotland<\/a>, so while access is unavailable physically this trial gives you the perfect opportunity to explore the archive digitally. This resource also compliments another digital archive we have access to at the Library, Literary Print Culture: The Stationers\u2019 Company Archive<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
