Its aim was to be the intellectual counterpart to <em>Radio Times<\/em>, then the BBC listings magazine, and featured commentaries on the intellectual broadcasts of the week as well as previews of major literary and musical programmes. What makes the archive even more interesting is that <em>The Listener<\/em> was original developed as the medium for reproducing broadcast talks (radio and TV) so is one of the few records of the content of many early broadcasts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2221\" style=\"width: 733px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2221\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2221 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/hcalibrarian\/files\/2018\/07\/The_Listener_Archive_frontpage_after_warineurope.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"723\" height=\"912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/hcalibrarian\/files\/2018\/07\/The_Listener_Archive_frontpage_after_warineurope.png 723w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/hcalibrarian\/files\/2018\/07\/The_Listener_Archive_frontpage_after_warineurope-238x300.png 238w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from front page Thursday, May 10, 1945.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Articles were diverse, with features on the death of King George V, a series of essays accompanying Sir Kenneth Clark\u2019s landmark art history programme <em>Civilisation<\/em>, interviews with authors such as Vladimir Nabokov, and the historian Geoffrey Elton writing on the decline of British universities in the 1960s. <em>The Listener<\/em> also attracted contributions from writers such as E.M. Forster, George Orwell, George Bernard Shaw, Virginia Wolf, W.H. Auden, Sylvia Plath and Philip Larkin.
