Thanks to a request from a student in HCA the Library currently has trial access to African American Newspapers, Series 1 and 2, 1827-1998<\/strong> from Readex. These fascinating databases provide online access to approximately 330 U.S. newspapers chronicling a century and a half of the African American experience.<\/p>\n

\nAccess is available both on and off-campus.<\/p>\n

African American Newspapers<\/strong> is a unique collection, which includes historically significant papers from more than 35 states and features many rare 19th-century titles.<\/p>\n

Coverage spans life in the Antebellum South; the spread of abolitionism; growth of the Black church; the Emancipation Proclamation; the Jim Crow Era; the Great Migration to northern cities, the West and Midwest in search of greater opportunity; rise of the NAACP; the Harlem Renaissance; the civil rights movement; political and economic empowerment; and more. You will also find first-hand perspectives on notable Americans from Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington to W.E.B. Du Bois and Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/p>\n

Newly digitised, these newspapers published by or for African Americans can now be browsed and searched as never before.<\/p>\n

This is a great opportunity for you to try out this database and enrich your research.<\/p>\n

Readex are also giving us trial access to Early American Newspapers Decade 1890-1899<\/strong>. While there is some crossover with Early American Newspapers, Series 2<\/strong>, that the Library already has access to (access from Newspapers & Magazines database list<\/a>), it does give us access to a bigger range of newspaper titles for the period 1890-1899.
