According to contemporaries Vossius&#8217;s extensive library was the best in Europe, if not the world, and after he died his library of books and manuscripts was sold to the University of Leiden.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1200\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1200\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1200 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/hcalibrarian\/files\/2017\/08\/Codices_Vossiani_Latini_VLQ_94-283x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/hcalibrarian\/files\/2017\/08\/Codices_Vossiani_Latini_VLQ_94-283x300.png 283w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/hcalibrarian\/files\/2017\/08\/Codices_Vossiani_Latini_VLQ_94.png 701w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from VLQ 094 &#8211; Lucretius, First half 9th c.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Codices Vossiani Latini<\/strong> include a large number of early medieval manuscripts\u00a0including major sources of many classic texts and 76 Carolingian manuscripts dating from before 900.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights from the collection include the earliest sources of Lucretius&#8217; <em>De rerum natura<\/em> and the oldest preserved illustrated herbarium in Latin (dating from around 600). The works also include the so-called \u2018Leidse Aratea\u2019, a Carolingian\u00a0codex (dating from around 840) with 39 beautiful miniatures of constellations based on examples from classical antiquity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1198\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1198\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1198 \" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/hcalibrarian\/files\/2017\/08\/Codices_Vossiani_Latini_VLQ_013.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"584\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from VLQ 013 &#8211; Ps.-Hippocrates, Ps.-Antonius Musa, Ps.-Apuleius, Iuridica Ecclesiastica, Liturgica, Oliverus Paderbornensis, Gothofridus Viterbiensis, Provinciale Eccles.
