Its the reason Thomson was famous (he designed the test), it was unique (no equivalent exists anywhere else in the world), and it was done on a huge scale (87, 498 children were tested in the first Scottish Mental Survey, and 70,805 in the second).<\/p>\n<p>For over a decade, Professor Ian Deary and his team have used the results of the tests in <a title=\"LBC studies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lothianbirthcohort.ed.ac.uk\/\">Lothian Birth Cohorts 1921 and 1936 <\/a>to explore\u00a0why some individuals&#8217; cognitive abilities decline more than others &#8211; vital and far reaching research in an increasingly ageing population.\u00a0 Hundreds of people given the intelligence test as a child have participated in the follow on studies, which have explored their cognitive skills, their physical well being, and their lives.<\/p>\n<p>At the very heart of all this data are the people themselves, and what the numbers given in the beautifully neat test ledgers don&#8217;t tell us.\u00a0\u00a0 Deary and his colleagues have previously secured funding for author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbclifetimes.org\/\">Ann Lingard to tell the Lothian Birth Cohort&#8217;s stories through words<\/a>, artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fionnacarlisle.com\/2013\/03\/08\/knowledge-exchange-fellow\/\">Fionna Carlisle through paint<\/a>, and photographer Linda Kosciewicz-Fleming through the lens.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-uI37FAI0mQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One individual who participated in the 1932 survey, but who was unable to tell his story, was Deary&#8217;s Uncle, Richard Deary.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_569\" style=\"width: 232px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-569\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-569  \" alt=\"Richard Deary\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary-222x300.jpg\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary.jpg 291w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Deary, courtesy of Professor Ian Deary<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Richard Deary was the son of a miner, and lived with his parents and five siblings<br \/>\nin a one-bedroom miners&#8217; terraced cottage.\u00a0 The family had the most basic of education &#8211; Richard would leave school at the age of 14.\u00a0 He, like the thousands of other school pupils who sat the test, was never told his results.\u00a0 He probably never gave them a second thought, and went on to become a miner like his Father.\u00a0 His IQ was an impressive 120.<\/p>\n<p>As an adult, Richard found himself in the midst of World War II:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_565\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary-Letter-home.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-565\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-565   \" alt=\"Richard Deary Letter home\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary-Letter-home-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary-Letter-home-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary-Letter-home-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary-Letter-home-624x467.jpg 624w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/godfreythomsonproject\/files\/2013\/12\/Richard-Deary-Letter-home.jpg 1501w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The last letter from Richard Deary to his parents before his death, courtesy of Professor Ian Deary<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In the last letter he sent to his parents, he tries to alleviate his parent&#8217;s worry, and informs them about a new fangled thing called &#8216;air graphs&#8217;.\u00a0 Two acts of kindness universal from children to their parents the world over.\u00a0 He ends the letter with a &#8216;cheerio&#8217;, and signs &#8216;your loving son&#8217;.\u00a0 Richard died aged 21 when his submarine struck a mine in the Mediterranean Sea 2 months later.<\/p>\n<p>On lecturing\u00a0at the McEwan Hall on the centenary of the psychology department in November 2006, Deary was presented with this rather wonderful poem by poet Michael Davenport, scribed as he listened to Richard&#8217;s story:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A PORTRAIT BY NUMBERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>27.10.2006: a psychologist speaks<\/p>\n<p>of intelligence quotients, cognitive differences,<\/p>\n<p>the Scottish Mental Survey 1932.<\/p>\n<p>Using Powerpoint he illustrates,<\/p>\n<p>shows details from a ledger of the time.<\/p>\n<p>He highlights one boy, Richard,<\/p>\n<p>born 4.4.1921:<\/p>\n<p>number 4 in a class list,<\/p>\n<p>IQ 120 on the Moray House Test.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2.8.1942: Richard\u2019s letter<\/p>\n<p>describes his submarine the \u2018Talisman\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He asks his parents not to worry<\/p>\n<p>if they do not often hear from him<\/p>\n<p>and finishes: \u2018Your Loving Son.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10.9.1942: the \u2018Talisman\u2019<\/p>\n<p>leaves Gibraltar reports<\/p>\n<p>a U-boat 5 days later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>18.9.1942: Richard dies at sea,<\/p>\n<p>presumed mined off Sicily.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s 21, his navy number:<\/p>\n<p>30938<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His nephew, the psychologist, describes<\/p>\n<p>follow-ups of 1930\u2019s survey scores:<\/p>\n<p>correlations with rank and fate in war;<\/p>\n<p>effects of illness, ageing, on the mental skills<\/p>\n<p>of those who still live on.<\/p>\n<p>And with a quiet love<\/p>\n<p>he has included Richard<\/p>\n<p>in this journey of discovery,<\/p>\n<p>his numbers, dates, transmuted<\/p>\n<p>into an elegy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Davenport<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That both history and science are fundamentally about people becomes obvious when looking at a story like Richard&#8217;s &#8211; or any of the cohorts who shared their lives with Deary and his team.\u00a0 Their stories may not be unusual, but they are all unique, and they allow us to gain some understanding of the humanity behind the numbers &#8211;
