The focus of that first post were\u00a0Fairbairn&#8217;s drawings of landscapes. For this return to the subject, I will be focusing on the drawings in\u00a0which\u00a0Fairbairn brings to life a cast of interesting characters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831080.1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-140\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831080.1.jpg\" alt=\"103831080.1\" width=\"1031\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831080.1.jpg 1031w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831080.1-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831080.1-1024x441.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1031px) 100vw, 1031px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When looking through the drawings in the William Ronald Dodds Fairbairn Archive it becomes immediately apparent that many of the characters in Fairbairn&#8217;s dreams made regular appearances. The men, women and children are drawn wearing distinctive clothing or they perform distinctive activities. Some of the recurring characters include a middle-aged women, often in Edwardian looking dress, redolent of Mary Poppins, a child in traditional Scottish dress, often with a dog, and a seated male figure. It is likely that the child represents Fairbairn himself, and the man and woman are perhaps his parents,\u00a0however, it is not my intention here to offer explanations or interpretations\u00a0of these characters; I&#8217;m sure you will form your own opinions\u00a0about that.<\/p>\n<p>The female character is often depicted leading the child\u00a0from a chain around his neck, or brandishing a weapon, typically a sword or stick:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831083.1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-143\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831083.1.jpg\" alt=\"103831083.1\" width=\"807\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831083.1.jpg 807w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831083.1-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 807px) 100vw, 807px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, on occasion she is portrayed\u00a0in a slightly less menacing way, such as below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831074.1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-142\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831074.1.jpg\" alt=\"103831074.1\" width=\"1083\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831074.1.jpg 1083w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831074.1-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831074.1-1024x406.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1083px) 100vw, 1083px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As with\u00a0the first image on this post, the image below includes the majority of the pantheon of Fairbairn&#8217;s dream characters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831128.1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-144\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831128.1.jpg\" alt=\"103831128.1\" width=\"733\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831128.1.jpg 733w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/fairbairn\/files\/2015\/06\/103831128.1-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whilst the majority of the characters in Fairbairn&#8217;s dream drawings are recognisable as humans, there are a few that have a\u00a0more abstract feel.
