{"id":2393,"date":"2018-02-20T18:54:27","date_gmt":"2018-02-20T18:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/datablog\/?p=2393"},"modified":"2018-02-20T18:54:27","modified_gmt":"2018-02-20T18:54:27","slug":"dealing-with-data-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/datablog\/2018\/02\/20\/dealing-with-data-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Dealing with Data, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One hundred researchers from across the University came together to present work in progress and discuss many tricky issues they face in \u2018dealing with data\u2019 at a Research Data Service sponsored event on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> November in Playfair Library.<\/p>\n<p>A theme that emerged from this year\u2019s event was around approaches to balancing the drive to make data open with the increasingly restrictive ethical and legal requirements for non-disclosure of personal data from research subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The University&#8217;s CIO and Librarian, Gavin McLachlan, set the scene for the day&#8217;s topics in his welcome address, referencing data driven innovation through the Edinburgh Region City Deal, the aims of the European Open Science Cloud, FAIR data (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), and the GDPR &#8211; the new General Data Protection Regulation coming into force in May, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Videos of speakers and links to presentations may be viewed from the event page at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/edin.ac\/2CypID0\">http:\/\/edin.ac\/2CypID0<\/a><\/strong>.
