The project provided a dynamic platform for University of Edinburgh student researchers across all schools to come together and develop collaborate installations that explore data re-use and interdisciplinary boundaries.\u00a0Research data are often invisible and complex to comprehend by the public and academic peers, with evolving technology and researcher-driving environments, DATA-X facilitate student researchers with the opportunity to visualize and communicate their research in a user-friendly format to audiences from within and outside the university.<\/p>\n<p>After a series of successful and engaging <a href=\"http:\/\/data-x.blogs.edina.ac.uk\/workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DATA-X workshops<\/a>, aimed to inform, shape and create \u2018installations\u2019 linked to digital data, the multidisciplinary teams (<em>including students from the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art, Reid School of Music, the School of Engineering, The Centre for Synthetic and Systems Biology, the School of Chemistry, the Centre for Integrative Physiology and the Queen\u2019s Medical Research Institute<\/em>) continued to work on their installations throughout the summer in preparation for the DATA-X exhibition and Symposium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DATA-X Exhibition:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0DATA-X Exhibition\u00a0ran from 26 November to 6 December 2016, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eca.ed.ac.uk\/\">Sculpture Court of the Edinburgh College of Art. <\/a>A total of six physical installations were installed:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/data-x.blogs.edina.ac.uk\/2016\/12\/01\/e-tunes-siraj-sabihuddin\/\">eTunes<\/a> <\/strong>by Dr Siraj Sabihuddin<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/datablog\/files\/2017\/02\/etunes1.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2047\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2047 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/datablog\/files\/2017\/02\/etunes1.jpeg\" alt=\"etunes1\" width=\"285\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>A collaborate project for novices to experience the process and creative input required in constructing a musical instrument from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/data-x.blogs.edina.ac.uk\/2016\/12\/01\/feel-the-heat-a-world-temperature-data-quilt-nathalie-vladis-julia-zaenker\/\">Feel the Heat<\/a> <\/strong>by Nathalie Vladis and Julia Zaenker<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/datablog\/files\/2017\/02\/feel-the-heat.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2048\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2048 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/datablog\/files\/2017\/02\/feel-the-heat.jpg\" alt=\"feel-the-heat\" width=\"306\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a>A data quilt, visualising world temperatures between 1961 to 1990. The installation explores the relationship between space, materiality and process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition launch, on 26 November, also included three performance installations that serenaded the audience throughout the evening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/data-x.blogs.edina.ac.uk\/2016\/12\/01\/o-ire-professor-nick-fells\/\">o ire<\/a> <\/strong>by Prof. Nick Fells<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A live audio performance during which the performance controller sculpt and shape sounds as the piece unfolds.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/data-x.blogs.edina.ac.uk\/2016\/11\/30\/wind-gust-42048-matt-giannotti\/\">Wind Gust 42048<\/a> <\/strong>by Matt Giannottii<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A composition based on wind data captured during Hurricane Matthew. Musicians captured the chaotic nature of the storm by moving around and inflecting sporadic sound intensity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/data-x.blogs.edina.ac.uk\/2016\/12\/01\/elegy-for-eagle-philippines-oli-jan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elegy for Eagle Philippines<\/a><\/strong> by Oli Jan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">An excerpt of Oli Jan&#8217;s composition project &#8216;<em>The Carnival of the Endangered Animals<\/em>&#8216;. The piece features sounds of endangered species on the IUCN Red List.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>DATA-X Symposium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">To accompany the exhibition, a\u00a0DATA-X <a href=\"http:\/\/data-x.blogs.edina.ac.uk\/files\/2016\/11\/Data-X-Prog.pdf\">symposium\u00a0<\/a>was held on 1 December 2016 in the Main Lecture Theatre of the Edinburgh College of Art. PhD researchers presented their \u2018installations\u2019 and demonstrated the tools, processes and techniques behind the installation. This was an informal event and an open forum to facilitate discussion with an academic and non-academic audience. Guest speakers included Dr Jane Haley, Scientific Coordinator for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edinburghneuroscience.ed.ac.uk\/\">Edinburgh Neuroscience<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eca.ed.ac.uk\/school-of-art\/news-events\/fusion-where-art-meets-neuroscience\">FUSION<\/a>, and Dr James Howie, co-founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascus.org.uk\/\">ASCUS<\/a>. Their talks entitled \u2018<em>FUSION \u2013where art meets neuroscience<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>ASCUS and the ASCUS Lab: catalysts for Artisience<\/em>\u2019, illustrated the efficacy of bridging the gap between the arts and sciences and how innovative, multidisciplinary projects can engage wider audiences and create novel public engagement initiatives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The next and final phase of the project includes the creation of a <a href=\"http:\/\/datashare.is.ed.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DataShare<\/a> Collection: the electronic equivalent of an Exhibition Catalogue in which the students will publish the data associated with their installations.
