Both SC and its newer offshoot, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datacarpentry.org\/\">Data Carpentry<\/a>, teaches methods and tools that helps researchers makes their science reproducible. Instructors at our workshops were from Leeds and EPCC. Comments from the learners &#8211; staff and postgraduate students from a range of schools, included, &#8216;Variety of needs and academic activities\/disciplines catered for. Useful exercies and explanations,&#8217; and &#8216;Very powerful tools.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Lessons can vary between different workshops, depending on the level of the learners and their requirements, as determined by a pre-workshop survey. The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1rw7-USb-U8EJdUJQx5cVPLGLH7Cko_ZdDCyLYck90v8\/edit?pref=2&amp;pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Carpentry workshop<\/a> on Monday and Tuesday included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using spreadsheets effectively<\/li>\n<li>OpenRefine<\/li>\n<li>Introduction to R<\/li>\n<li>R and visualisation<\/li>\n<li>Databases and SQL<\/li>\n<li>Using R with SQLite<\/li>\n<li>Managing Research &amp; Data Management Plans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1nXvAgVnG6Gx6NWX5zGz47j8sfbTkhNSB9MrsAk-VWFE\/edit?pref=2&amp;pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Software Carpentry workshop<\/a> was aimed at researchers who write their own code, and covered the following topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduction to the Shell<\/li>\n<li>Version Control<\/li>\n<li>Introduction to Python<\/li>\n<li>Using the Shell (scripts)<\/li>\n<li>Version Control (with Github)<\/li>\n<li>Open Science and Open Research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_1971\" style=\"width: 4618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1971\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1971\" src=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/datablog\/files\/2016\/08\/Group2.jpg\" alt=\"Software Carpentry learners\" width=\"4608\" height=\"2592\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Software Carpentry learners<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Clearly the workshops were valued by learners and very worthwhile.
