{"id":1,"date":"2017-07-26T10:59:06","date_gmt":"2017-07-26T10:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/?p=1"},"modified":"2017-11-07T14:05:08","modified_gmt":"2017-11-07T14:05:08","slug":"hello-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/2017\/07\/26\/hello-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing &#8216;Body Language&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8216;Body Language: movement, dance and physical education in Scotland, 1890-1990&#8217;<\/strong> is a new <a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.ac.uk\/funding\/research-resources-grants-support-libraries-and-archives\">Wellcome Trust Research Resources-funded<\/a> project between\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/information-services\/about\/organisation\/library-and-collections\/sections-staff\/library-collections-sections\/special-collections\">Edinburgh University Library Special Collections\u00a0<\/a>and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturepk.org.uk\/museums-and-galleries\/the-fergusson-gallery\/\">Fergusson Gallery, Perth\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>with the support of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/education\">\u00a0Moray House School of\u00a0Education<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.margaretmorrismovement.com\/\">Margaret Morris Movement International<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishgymnastics.org\/\">Scottish Gymnastics<\/a>. I am the archivist on this project and over the next two years I will be\u00a0cataloguing, preserving and making available these three significant collections relating to movement, dance, physical education and gymnastics in Scotland:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The archives of Margaret Morris Movement International<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-55 \" style=\"font-weight: bold\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/Dancers-and-circle-300x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/Dancers-and-circle-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/Dancers-and-circle-768x673.jpg 768w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/Dancers-and-circle-1024x897.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/Dancers-and-circle-342x300.jpg 342w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Margaret Morris (1891-1980) established her own system for dance training, Margaret Morris Movement, which focuses on breathing techniques, posture and strength training with co-ordinated movements. Margaret Morris Movement International works today with mentally and physically disabled persons using Morris\u2019s systems and techniques.\u00a0The archives contain\u00a0costume designs, music scores, choreography notes, scripts, sketchbooks, diaries, teaching and publicity materials, photographs and around 8,000 items of correspondence from individuals including Edward Elgar, Stanley Baldwin and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The records of Dunfermline College of Physical Education<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-40\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/DCPE-gym2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/DCPE-gym2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/DCPE-gym2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/DCPE-gym2-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/DCPE-gym2.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Dunfermline College of Physical Education, founded in 1905, was one of the first training colleges for women students of physical education and had an important influence on developing the role of movement and the body in educational practice. The records comprise governance, staff and student records, teaching materials, artefacts<br \/>\nincluding costumes and uniforms, photographs, and a collection of performance and<br \/>\neducational films. It also incorporates the records of DCPE\u2019s Old Student Association.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The archives of Scottish Gymnastics<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-41\" src=\"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/SG-drill-hall-300x268.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/SG-drill-hall-300x268.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/SG-drill-hall-336x300.jpg 336w, https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/bodylanguage\/files\/2017\/07\/SG-drill-hall.jpg 754w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Scottish Gymnastics was founded in 1890 as a voluntary organisation representing a number of Scottish gymnastic and athletic clubs. Broadening its initial focus from military fitness to general health and wellbeing, it was significant for promoting and supporting gymnastics in Scotland and abroad.
