{"id":2,"date":"2012-07-06T08:03:50","date_gmt":"2012-07-06T08:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/benefitsofsharing\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2013-01-16T16:53:58","modified_gmt":"2013-01-16T16:53:58","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk\/benefitsofsharing\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This project seeks to contribute towards a new vision for library systems by investigating the following question:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHow would a shared library management system improve services in Scotland?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This will be achieved by a project team backed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/scurl.ac.uk\/\">Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries<\/a> (SCURL), and led by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/schools-departments\/information-services\/about\/organisation\/library-and-collections\">University of Edinburgh Library<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.is.stir.ac.uk\/\">The University of Sitrling<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are several aspects to this question that will be investigated:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Services<strong> <\/strong>\u2013 how do different groups of users benefit from shared content and systems, and are there any complications introduced from such sharing?<\/li>\n<li>Systems<strong> <\/strong>\u2013 how far can a shared system sensibly reach, do suitable solutions exist that can be shared and that scale appropriately, and to what extent is a local view of a shared system required or possible?<\/li>\n<li>Content<strong> <\/strong>\u2013 how common are the current content holdings, licences and cataloguing practises across the libraries in Scotland that would help or hinder deeper sharing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Objectives<br \/>\n<\/strong>This project will examine different aspects that would need to be taken into account for a regional shared library management system. This will include considerations such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are the cultural issues or barriers to collaboration, and how do these differ between the library service providers and their various stakeholder groups?<\/li>\n<li>If content were held in a shared environment there are likely to be issues relating to security, intellectual property, sharing, and reuse.<\/li>\n<li>What are the costs and benefits for the different roles involved?<\/li>\n<li>What are the different levels of search and discovery services that may be possible \u2013 from a shared OPAC to local discovery layers?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Anticipated Outputs and Outcomes<br \/>\n<\/strong>This project will bring benefits to <a href=\"http:\/\/jisc.ac.uk\/\">Jisc<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sconul.ac.uk\/\">SCONUL<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/scurl.ac.uk\/\">SCURL<\/a>, and the wider library world by investigating the potential shared regional library management systems. Lessons learned by the project will demonstrate possible parts of a new vision for library systems taken from a regional shared services perspective.
