(2017) <em>Black and British: a forgotten history<\/em>. London: Pan Books.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Author(s)<\/strong>: The first part of the reference is the author\u2019s name. In this case, \u201cOlusoga, D.\u201d indicates the author is David Olusoga. If there are multiple authors, they will be listed in the order they appear on the book itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Year of Publication<\/strong>: The year the book was published is in brackets. Here, it\u2019s \u201c2017\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Title of the Book<\/strong>: The title of the book is italicized. In this example, it\u2019s <em>\u201cBlack and British: a forgotten history\u201d<\/em>. Only the first word of the title and any proper nouns are capitalized.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Place of Publication<\/strong>: This is the city where the publisher is located. In this case, London.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Publisher<\/strong>: The name of the publishing company. Here, it\u2019s \u201cPan Books\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You can find this book on our library catalogue, <a href=\"https:\/\/discovered.ed.ac.uk\/discovery\/search?vid=44UOE_INST:44UOE_VU2&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DiscoverEd<\/strong><\/a>, and take a look at how the citations for it would appear in various different citation styles. Let\u2019s break it down.<\/p>\n<p>Example journal article reference:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kim, I. (2020) \u2018A study of feminism and womanism in Korean hip hop songs by female rappers\u2019. <em>Journal of World Popular Music<\/em>, 7(2), 228\u2013249.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Author(s)<\/strong>: Similar to book references, the authors are listed first: surname followed by initial(s). The author here is Iljung Kim.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Year of Publication<\/strong>: The year the article was published, in this case, \u201c2020\u201d, in round brackets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Title of the Article<\/strong>: The title of the article is not italicised, and appears in single quotation marks. Here, it\u2019s \u2018A study of feminism and womanism in Korean hip hop songs by female rappers\u2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Title of the Journal<\/strong>: The journal\u2019s title is italicized to make it clearly different to the title of the article, and the first letter of each word in the journal title is capitalised, except for linking words such as and, of, the, for. In this example, it\u2019s<em> \u201cJournal of World Popular Music\u201d<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Volume and Issue Number<\/strong>: The volume number of the journal comes first, without brackets, followed by the issue or part number, in brackets. In this example \u201c7(2)\u201d means volume 7, issue 2. Sometimes instead of an issue or part number there will be a month or season listed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Page Numbers<\/strong>: The range of pages the article appears on. \u201c228\u2013249\u201d means the article starts on page 228 and ends on page 249.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1>Tips for new students<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pay attention to details<\/strong>: small details like punctuation and italics are important in academic references.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use reference management tools<\/strong>: tools like EndNote, Zotero, or Mendeley can help you manage and format your references correctly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consult your style guide<\/strong>: different subject disciplines use different referencing styles (e.g. Chicago, Harvard, APA, or MLA). Make sure you know which one your department, School or deanery prefers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Want to learn more?
