We are Open for Business!

We are very excited to announce that the new study spaces on the Lower Ground Floor are now open!

We know how hard it can be to find a study spot, so we listened to our students and added 358 new study spaces to the Main Library over the summer, as this blog has documented. Today we celebrated the grand opening of the Lower Ground Floor, which has been renovated for student use.

We would also love to hear your feedback about the new spaces, and about any further changes you want to see in the Library, so please get in touch via Facebook or Twitter, or use the survey forms we will be distributing in the Lower Ground Floor.

We hope that these new study spaces will make the upcoming deadlines a little easier!

Additional electrical enabling works have been planned to accommodate these new desk top power modules which will see a number of areas affected, these works have been scheduled in order to minimise disruption to users.  These areas will be cordoned off to users whilst the work is taking place.

Compressing collections to create more study spaces – update 21 July 2016

This week we have finished compressing Main Library collections on the 2nd floor and have moved up to the 3rd floor.

Our contractors have moved collections on over 10,000 metres of shelving – quite an achievement!

In the coming weeks the empty shelving resulting from the compression will be removed, and additional study spaces added. This work has included a large amount of noisy reconfiguration of shelving and has restricted access to lifts and collections so apologies for the disruption caused.

We’ve been struck by how understanding our users have been during the work, so thank you all for your continuing patience.

Some of the collections (pamphlets and folios in P and the full collections of P, PA and PB) previously on the 3rd floor have now moved down to the 2nd floor.

The 2nd floor now has collections A-PB and the 3rd floor has collections PC-Z.

Signs will be updated accordingly.

Compressing collections to create more study spaces – update 14 July 2016

Over recent weeks we have been progressing well with our project to compress the Library collections on the 2nd floor.

We now have lots of empty shelves (photo below) so are able to begin to move some books down from the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor; this will continue with the plan to free up space throughout all floors so that we can introduce additional study spaces.

Compressing collections

During this move access to lifts and collections may be restricted, but we will have staff available to help you if necessary.

Apologies for the continuing disruption at this time.

Main Library Collection Compression

The move of collections in the Main Library is now underway. Contract staff are working on the second floor to free up shelves which will be removed later in the summer to allow room for additional study spaces.

Thank you for your ongoing patience while the work is underway.

The empty shelves are beginning to appear!
